Chapter 87 Ada Shows Up
Sabrina stopped asking questions, which made Marcus feel somewhat uncomfortable.
"We were classmates. We used to go to the same school when we were kids. Curtis had better grades than Victor and I, and we often sought his help with our studies. The three of us became friends over time. I'll let you in on a little secret: because Curtis's grades were so good, we used to envy him and even bet on whether we could beat Curtis," Marcus chuckled as he reminisced about their childhood.
"At that time, I thought the two of us could beat Curtis. Well, Curtis decided to teach us a lesson, and he gave us a good beating."
Hearing Marcus talk about their past, Sabrina was quite surprised, especially about Curtis being involved in a fight. It seemed completely out of character for Curtis, who had always come across as aloof and someone who wouldn't engage in physical confrontations.
Curtis was known for resolving things through words, and so, Sabrina found this revelation astonishing.
"It doesn't sound like something Curtis would do," Sabrina remarked.
Marcus appeared frustrated. "You're right. Curtis doesn't usually resort to physical violence. He's more of a strategist, always using his wits to outsmart others. But we got ambushed by him several times and couldn't take it anymore, so we thought about fighting back. Surprise, surprise, we couldn't never win him in a fight."
Recalling his childhood experiences, Marcus still felt a bit embarrassed. He couldn't outsmart Curtis, and they ended up being pinned down and beaten up by him.
"However, ever since then, we formed a strong friendship with Curtis. You might not know this, but although Curtis is just an assistant to the company CEO now, the respect and treatment he gets aren't any different from that of a vice president. He's well respected wherever we go."
Sabrina was unaware of this fact, but she was impressed by Curtis's rapid rise in the company, given his age.
"I genuinely envy the bond you guys share," Sabrina remarked.
When she was younger, due to family reasons, she didn't have many close friends. So she was naturally envious that Curtis had so many good friends.
Marcus smiled and said, "You can consider us friends too. When Curtis first got married, none of us believed it would happen. It didn't seem like something Curtis would do."
At the mention of her marriage with Curtis, Sabrina wasn't sure how to respond. After all, her marriage with Curtis was more of a mutual arrangement, or business transaction. So, it wouldn't be right for her to consider Curtis or his friends as her close friends.
As they approached the entrance of Victor's villa, Sabrina could see a woman waiting at the gate.
It was Ada.
Why Ada was here? Didn't Barry say he would meet up with Ada? Why was Ada here without Barry?
Marcus didn't know Ada, but he noticed the change in Sabrina's expression.
"Do you know that woman at the entrance? They usually don't allow outsiders in here," he said.
Sabrina considered pretending not to know her, but she wanted to find out where Barry had gone recently. Therefore, she signaled Marcus to stop the car. Sabrina got out, and Ada, seeing Sabrina approach, hurried over.
From a distance, they couldn't see Ada's face clearly, but now, Sabrina was surprised.
Ada was usually stylish and glamorous, carrying an air of arrogance. However, now she looked disheveled. Her clothes were tattered and she was covered in bruises. The bruise over her left eye seemed extra painful. It was easy to assume she had escaped from a dangerous situation.
Ada burst into tears as she saw Sabrina. She held Sabrina's hand tightly, and Sabrina was amazed by how clean Ada's hand was despite her dirty appearance.
"You're finally back! I've been waiting for you here for a long time. I was almost beaten to death by Barry. Please, you have to help me!" she said.
Sabrina found this statement even more perplexing. She knew Barry's temperament very well. Over the years, he had developed a short fuse due to job-related stress and was often in a bad mood at home. However, he had never laid a hand on a woman, and it seemed bizarre that he would now.
"How did you find this place? I never told you I had moved here."
She was worried that Ada's ex-boyfriend might show up again, so Sabrina didn't tell Ada about the move. And in any case, Sabrina didn't think it was necessary to mention it to Ada either.
Ada was taken aback by her question. She hadn't expected Sabrina to be more concerned about how she had found her way here, rather than her serious injuries.
"I... I have a friend. I asked him to help me find you, and he lives around this area, so that's how I knew I'd find you here."
Ada's gaze was evasive, and it didn't seem like she was telling the truth.
Meanwhile, Marcus had stepped out of the car and stood next to Sabrina.
He stared at Ada with a displeased expression. He had already sensed that something was off with this woman in the car earlier.
"If your friend lives in this neighborhood, why are you waiting at the gate instead of going inside? You didn't know when Sabrina would return," Marcus questioned, making Ada uncomfortable.
Ada looked to Sabrina for help, her eyes pleading. Sabrina, however, remained aloof and did not respond to Ada's reaction.
"You said Barry came to see you and even hit you, then you must know where he's at right now?" Sabrina said.
"What are you saying? Do you think I'm lying? Look at my injuries, they can't be fake. He came after me like he was about to kill me. Honestly, I barely managed to escape. How would I know where he is right now?!"
Ada's response left both Sabrina and Marcus surprised. She was only trying to find out what had happened, but Ada's outburst was rather odd.
"You claimed Barry hurt you, so you should tell me where he is, so I can help you. Otherwise, you should consider reporting this to the police."
