Chapter 75 The Deed is Gone!
Reality was never going to let anyone's wishes come true all the time, was it? Curtis had not wanted Marcus to notice them, but alas, he did.
Marcus was, in his words, just trying to live a life different from the one he grew up in. Since there were several close calls with his fib, he had prepared to look the part today.
Seeing Curtis excited Marcus so much that he ran to Curtis' car, his work forgotten. "What a coincidence! I didn't know you guys would be here! Can you wait? I'm on my last delivery. May I have dinner at your place?" he asked straight away, no bashfulness evident.
"Sure!"
"Hell no."
The two differing answers made two people pause. Sabrina considered Curtis skeptically. What was wrong with having Marcus over for dinner?
Marcus himself was more hurt than anything. Did Curtis reject him because he was in his delivery man uniform?! Rude! He should totally snitch him to Daniel and let the old man teach this guy a lesson later…
"I just wanna join dinner for once, man. Can you say yes to that, Curtis? We've always had meals together!" Marcus whined while shooting secret glances at him. It was a threat—if Curtis declined, he might spill the beans about Curtis's identity!
Curtis gritted his teeth. Marcus thought he was the only one who had leverage, huh?
"No, that's not why. I'm just worried about your work progress, that's all. Well, you're welcome to join us after your delivery is done."
His change in attitude was a little too much that Marcus balked. Was this a setup?
Sabrina was startled, too. She understood a little belatedly that Curtis was just worried that Marcus' presence would somehow disrupt his own mood at home.
Well, these two might have been close, but to just decline someone's offer to join you like that was still a move that could easily attract misunderstanding and hurt feelings.
Marcus finished his work and parked his nondescript car somewhere before getting into Curtis' car. "Let's hit the road! I'm sooooo hungry! I had only two buns for lunch!" he declared.
"No way! Is your work really that hectic?" Sabrina asked.
"Lady, you have no idea!" He began to narrate his one-day adventure of being a delivery guy to Sabrina's growing curiosity.
It ended up being a rather valuable perspective for her. "Gee, suddenly I feel like my desk job is heavenly in comparison," she replied.
Marcus nodded enthusiastically. He was starting to regret lying about the whole delivery bit back then—why did he not just come clean as a rich kid who never knew an honest day of work?!
He would not need to cover his story by actually working nor did he have to worry about accidentally exposing who he really was.
The only problem that came with this was explaining how Curtis, the supposed "middle-class nobody," managed to have friends from higher places. But hey, that would be for Sabrina to figure out.
They chatted through the journey and reached home. Marcus dashed inside before the two—and minutes later, one could hear Daniel and Marcus laughing heartily.
"Marcus is amazing. He can talk to just about anyone—look! He's already giving Daniel a great time! We should let Marcus visit more often. Would help with Daniel's boredom at home so much!"
Curtis considered Sabrina's earnestness and said nothing. Duh, of course Marcus was having fun with his grandfather—these two had known each other from way back!
"Let's put a pin on this for some other time. Marcus has got a job to do, anyway. Say, didn't you say you wanted to sell your apartment unit? Someone wanted to purchase something similar the other day, but they said they wanted a glimpse of your deed first. Can you show me?"
Sabrina dashed to her room in excitement. She had been throwing all of her things, especially documents, in a hazardous bunch before sending them over here. It took her some time to search through her belongings, but she could not find the deed.
Her face turned pale. "My deed… it's not here! Where could it be?!"
"Try to retrace your steps and search again, more slowly. I'll call the guard and ask them to search your apartment. Maybe you dropped it somewhere."
Sabrina ran back to her room and tried again. Curtis, meanwhile, told the management to search the apartment.
Despite her efforts, nothing turned up. Her frazzled mind began to concoct a suspicion. Could her brother have taken her deed away? Or could it be Ada?
It would have spelled a world of trouble if either of them had taken it…
