Chapter 73 Stirring Up Trouble
Sabrina was unsure why Ada chose her to be the one to bail her out, but if this meant one step closer to understanding why they fought, she was willing to do it.
Surprisingly, she ended up bailing both Ada and Aaron. The latter had not asked, but Sabrina did it just to gloat on his face. Now it felt like he was only out because of her.
"Thanks but no thanks. I didn't come to your office in peace anyway," Aaron went straight to the chase.
Sabrina almost laughed. No gratitude… and an unrepentant admission to wanting to kick up troubles! What an asshole.
"What are you looking at me like that for? The two years we dated were nothing but fraught with shit after shit, all thanks to you! I deserve compensation for putting up with you, period! It's that, or I'll keep harassing you until you go mad!" he declared.
Sabrina almost laughed. "Wow. How did I not see what a shitty person you are back when we were dating? You should be grateful I don't come after your sorry ass for the debt you owe me," she replied. "Did you really think I bailed you out because I felt sad for some guy I used to see? Nah. I just wanted to see you humiliated. I want to see your face when you realize you're only out because of me. You look so pathetic right now!"
Aaron's face was red in rage. Had it not been their current location, he would have thrown his knuckles on Sabrina's face right there and then, too.
"You're the reason I was detained in a cell back then! You're the reason I lost my job and haven't been employed for months! You're the reason I'm suffering, and you don't even think you owe me reparation! I'm a desperate man, Sabrina. I'm not telling you this to make you feel good, no. I'm telling you as a warning… You do not want to know the lengths a desperate man will go to save himself."
Aaron sounded so sincere about his bullshit that Sabrina could have believed him if she had no knowledge of what really transpired. "Oh, shut up. What reparation? I was the victim. You should be glad I didn't ask you for reparation! In fact, I should be the one warning you," she snarled. "Don't ever show your face in front of me again, Aaron Fletcher. I'm perfectly capable of sending your ass to the police the second time. You wanna bet on that?!"
Aaron scowled, but he kept quiet. "You think you've won because you've got some money now, Sabrina Roth. But this isn't over yet. There might be a day when you'll need my help… and you'll wish you never pissed me off," he declared before marching to a cab and leaving.
Ada had not spoken a single word throughout the journey. It was only after they arrived at her apartment—when they were both climbing the stairs—Sabrina suddenly asked, "You know him?"
Ada, as Sabrina expected, jumped. Nonetheless, she frowned.
"Y-Yea. We used to be classmates, and then he conned me out of my money and left. I've been trying to pinpoint his ass ever since."
That was believable to a degree, but it belied a bigger point of curiosity: why did these two show up where Sabrina worked at the same time?
"How did you guys meet each other this morning?" Sabrina asked.
"I wanted to see you! I reached the entrance when I saw Aaron sneaking around like a rat!" she explained angrily. "Do you know how much money he owes me? He robbed me of hundreds of thousands worth when I was just a student! There was no way I was gonna let him get away!"
Ada was just a student who was living hand to mouth back then, so of course Aaron provoked such rage. And yet, there was something fishy about what she said—Sabrina just felt that way. Nonetheless, after seeing how infuriated Ada was, she decided not to press her on.
Well, no matter what Ada's history was with Aaron, she was now her brother's girlfriend. She was still one of Sabrina's people, in a way.
"Alright, let's leave those things aside for now, okay? You should relax and try to clean yourself up, okay? I'll bring you something nice to eat once I finish work, deal?"
Sabrina left the apartment after Ada settled down. On her way out, she noticed a lot of changes to the furniture. Gone was Sabrina's favored aesthetics; it was now brimming with Ada's touch.
The change slightly miffed Sabrina off, but at the end of the day, Ada was the resident for the moment. It was only natural that Ada would decorate it to her own taste sooner or later.
Her real contention was how Ada said not a word about these changes, let alone ask for permission.
Sabrina told Curtis all about these events over text. Predictably, the man did not reply to a single message, but Sabrina had not been waiting. She dropped the phone back into her bag. She ate a bun for lunch and went back to work.
Unfortunately for her, there was more trouble waiting for her that day. She received a call from Barry.
"Ada just called me and told me she got hit at the entrance of your office! Did you know how bad it was for her?! You should have helped her!"
