Chapter 71 Ada and Aaron

Ada's message was about Victor and Marcus. It had gotten to the point where Sabrina had to wonder why she cared that much about them. These were friends of her husband! Sure, maybe she and her husband were not as close as their relationship roles would have suggested them to be, but this still creeped her out. Sabrina showed the message to Curtis. "Honestly, what does she even want to achieve by this point? I swear, she keeps asking the weirdest questions." Curtis sighed. "Victor's the boss of our company, right? That makes him rich. He's also gentlemanly to women without showing any sexual intent in the things he says or does. Both money and manners make a woman feel secure about him, don't you think? Of course, she'd ask about him." Sabrina reeled. "She's aiming for Victor. But why? I know my brother is no saint, but she's still dating him right now. This isn't right!" She tugged on her hair a little. How could she stop Ada? There had to be a way. "But if I don't send her Victor's number, Ada will never stop. She's the type who doesn't know when to quit." Curtis thought for a moment. He took his phone, told Sabrina he had to make a call, and made his way next to the window. The call took an hour. Curtis' expression shifted from a relaxed expression to somewhat severe, until he looked like he was pressing back irritation. Finally, he wore an unreadable expression. Sabrina thought it was the sort of look that no one would have ever expected Curtis to make. It was actually weird to see it. "Can you stop staring at me?" Curtis complained. Her reaction to his expression was hilarious. "Just hand this over to Victor and let him solve this himself. He hates everything about this, which only means he'll be able to solve this." Sabrina could not believe it. What sort of friend would just leave a knotty problem to his friend without giving them some support and call it a day? "Do you know how persistent Ada is? She's going to harass Victor till kingdom come! And what if she has an even worse motive?" Sabrina countered. "You're his best friend. Shouldn't you help him out of this?" Curtis thought she had a point, but he insisted, "Victor is more experienced with this sort of thing than you might have given him credit for. He is used to gold-diggers throwing themselves at his arms. He's been through this way too many times to count. Besides, the girls he had to shrug off in the past occupy even higher social statuses than Ada does." Sabrina was unconvinced. She was the one who started the Ada fuse—so now, she could not sit this one out. Curtis sighed. He was finally the one watching the drama unfold instead of being the center of the drama, and yet he felt oddly unhappy with this reversal. It did not feel as exhilarating as Marcus and Victor had made it out to be. "How about letting Marcus handle it? He's more shrewd than his himbo mannerism might suggest." Sabrina considered Curtis, nonplussed. For a supposed best friend, this man was really very eager to look the other way. She kept her observation to herself, though. "You know what? Give me some time. Maybe I should invite Ada to stay over and see if I can pry any information on her boyfriend, or what she really thinks about Barry." Curtis was against the idea. He had finally moved to a new place—the last thing he wanted was to attract trouble and annoyance to his life again. Sabrina opened her mouth and closed it again. She remembered their relationship. She thought about the house they were living in. "Fine. I'll listen to you this time," she relented. It sounded weird to Curtis' ears. Sabrina sent a few perfunctory messages and then stopped responding. She was contemplating how to meet Ada and, in the process, figure out what had happened between Ada and Barry. Little did she know that such a chance would come to her soon. One morning when Curtis dropped her off as usual, she happened upon a familiar scene right at the entrance of the company. Ada was being harassed by none other than Aaron Fletcher. The fact that these two—who should have no business knowing each other—were somehow interacting with one another was bemusing. She had some time to kill before work began, so she found a hidden spot to watch. The two should not have known each other, and yet Aaron refused to let Ada go. He kept talking to her about something. Ada, for her part, was shouting at him. Sabrina could hear her voice from here. The commotion naturally attracted heads. Bystanders multiplied. Sabrina weighed the options and joined in. Now that there was a crowd, both parties took a step back to protect their optics and dignity even as their conversation went on.
