Chapter 70 The Prophet
Despite her feelings, Sabrina remained resolute.
Dinner that evening was notably quieter than usual. Words were exchanged, but they were soft echoes rather than the dinner's normal hum of life.
Everyone knew the reason for the quiet. It was Ada's unsettling presence. Ada's behavior had been increasingly suspicious, so everyone tried to act subdued around her. The atmosphere was not exactly chilly, but it was far colder than usual.
After finishing dinner, Ada was visibly uncomfortable with the silence and volunteered to leave. As soon as she was gone, Victor and Marcus let out a sigh of relief and slumped into the sofa.
"Get up, what's gotten into you?" Curtis eyed the two men, who had ungracefully thrown themselves onto the couch, and gave each of them a firm kick.
Victor and Marcus looked up, visibly annoyed at Curtis. "That's a bit much, don't you think? After the evening we've endured?"
"Don't overreact. Didn't you see how hard it was to talk to that woman? I had to swallow my words two or three times before saying anything. And her gaze, it's downright unnerving!" Victor shuddered at the memory of Ada's piercing looks at dinner, his skin crawling with goosebumps.
"She's got a boyfriend, right? So why is she giving me such intense stares?"
"Don't tell me she's taken a liking to you? You do look presentable today. Maybe she's sensed an opportunity and is aiming to cling to you," Marcus teased, a mischievous glint in his eye, as if relishing some scandalous news.
Victor rolled his eyes and kicked Marcus, who dodged it with a gleeful look.
"Believe me. I could tell there was something off about her gaze," Victor retorted, rolling his eyes. But was that even the point, though?
Irritated, Victor yanked Marcus by the collar toward the window. "Lost your senses? Have you forgotten Ada is still Sabrina's brother's girlfriend? How do you think Sabrina would react if she heard you talking like that?"
Only then did Marcus realize his mistake. "Right, I forgot. So much for that gossip. Here I was, hoping for some earth-shattering gossip. But alas, it's just mundane reality," he said, his excitement deflated, and he retreated to the solace of the couch.
"By the way, why did you invite her over today? Are there issues at the apartment again? Any news about her boyfriend? You know, with my contacts in so many courier companies, it's super easy for me to find out about someone. Way faster than the police, too." Since Victor was off-limits for gossip, Marcus had no choice but to turn his attention to Sabrina.
With a frown, Sabrina responded, "I just want to figure out who her ex-boyfriend is, but she won't say. All she told me was that he's quite wealthy, and also..."
"Did she also bring up Victor? He's looking particularly sharp today. That's designer wear, isn't it? I hardly ever see him dressed so finely."
Sabrina gave Marcus a puzzled look. Why was he also so fixated on Victor's attire?
"Victor's the big boss, it's no secret he's wealthy. Changing outfits is hardly noteworthy. But how do you know that Ada was asking about Victor just now?"
Marcus seemed a bit smug as he waved his hand dismissively. "Oh, it's obvious. People in our circle can be quite dramatic when it comes to men. Or rather, I could tell by the way she looked at me, that she is after my money."
"Circle? What 'circle' are you referring to?" Sabrina’s curiosity was piqued by this reference to their 'courier circle,' a concept foreign to her. The room lapsed into an uncomfortable silence.
Sabrina's face showed curiosity while Marcus tensed, feeling the weight of their stares. He mentally berated himself for letting his mouth run.
"I mean, being a courier, I deliver packages, right? The more deliveries I make, the more people I meet, and the more I learn all sorts of things," Marcus hastily explained. He was cautious not to reveal too much, knowing any further slip-ups might blow all of their covers.
Sabrina let the subject go. After all, couriers did meet a wide array of people in their line of work.
"You should be careful though, Victor. I have a feeling this woman is not as simple as she seems. She asked about you twice and even hinted at moving in, something she's never mentioned until you showed up. I think she has her sights set on you."
Previously, Ada had made no such mentions, but her sudden interest upon Victor's arrival pointed to ulterior motives.
Victor shuddered at the thought, "Okay, got it. I'll be more careful. From now on, I'm staying put in my office and won't wander about."
Sabrina's laughter echoed at the sight of Victor's terrified face, with Marcus quickly adding his own teasing guffaws. Victor immediately turned the jest back on Marcus, and the two men began playfully scuffling in the living room, abandoning any pretense of adult behavior.
Their stay at the villa was short-lived and they left after some casual conversation. Just as they exited, Sabrina's phone buzzed. It was a message from Ada.
