Chapter 172 A Meal Invite
It was uncertain what Curtis said to Finnick and Winnie. They only noticed a slight discomfort on Finnick's face, but in front of Sabrina, he remained silent.
"We finally meet. How about we all go grab a meal together?" Curtis's unexpected proposal stunned Sabrina, and Victor almost burst into laughter. It was clear that Curtis had some ulterior motives. Who would invite their love rival out for dinner? Was this an attempt to assert dominance?
The stiffness in Finnick's expression reflected how shocked Sabrina was. She couldn't believe Curtis would suggest such a thing. Honestly, it was a little laughable.
"Are you sure about inviting them? I think they might be busy. Maybe let them go on with their work first. We have our own things to do, right?" Sabrina felt embarrassed. It was strange to invite others for a meal at this hour, especially since they had just come out of a party.
Besides, Curtis seemed full of animosity today, and Sabrina couldn't simply ignore it.
"Although we have things to do too, they're not urgent. It's not often that we meet, so why not have a meal together? It's a good opportunity to improve relationships. Or do you think we shouldn't dine with them?" Curtis threw the decision to Sabrina, who was already extremely uncomfortable. With the situation between her and Finnick and Curtis's unexpected suggestion, she didn't know how to respond best.
Of course, Curtis wasn't deliberately trying to make things difficult for Sabrina. He could tell she didn't want this situation to become more complex or awkward, but feeling uncomfortable himself, he just wanted everyone to sit down for a meal and sort things out.
"It's okay. It's late, and I was planning to have a late-night meal anyway. Since we've all run into each other, why not go together? Having late-night snacks is more enjoyable when shared with everyone, right?" Curtis suggested.
Finnick accepted with a smile, showing no signs of being coerced. This eased Sabrina's worries a bit. As long as he didn't feel uncomfortable, there wouldn't be a major issue.
"And you?" Sabrina turned to Victor.
Though having this dinner together tonight felt rather awkward, having Victor join in might alleviate some of the tension. After all, Sabrina felt awkward being in the middle of these two.
Victor naturally agreed to join. He wanted to see how this situation would unfold, especially with Curtis showing signs of jealousy.
"Alright. I haven't eaten much tonight anyway, so let's go together," Victor said.
Eventually, they decided on a small food stall at a bustling night market. Curtis rarely visited places like these and usually didn't encourage Sabrina to come here either. He felt that street food wasn't hygienic, and inviting guests to such a place didn't seem appropriate.
Victor, on the other hand, was more open-minded. Despite growing up with some restrictions, he was quite curious about things outside his usual sphere and didn't have as many taboos as Curtis did. He was interested in the street food and was a frequent visitor.
As Victor enthusiastically discussed the food options, Sabrina was surprised by his depth of knowledge. "With all this talk, it seems like you never go to work. Are all bosses as laid-back as you? Are you perhaps handing off all your work to Curtis so you can enjoy late-night snacks every day?"
Every night, Curtis stayed up late working. Sabrina often slept while he worked, and when she woke up, he had already gone off to work. Sometimes, she'd wonder if Curtis had worked through the night without rest.
Victor widened his eyes, feeling like he'd been roasted thoroughly. What did they mean by him not working and handing all the work to Curtis? Curtis was the real boss here. It was normal for him to work a bit more, wasn't it?
"Can't really say that. Curtis loves working more than I do, and he deserves extra for that. My salary is just average, but with the extra work Curtis does, he earns more. He's supporting himself, the entire family, and later on, you guys might have kids to take care of, right?"
Victor's comment, though casual, left both Sabrina and Curtis speechless. They hadn't considered children before, and their marriage was temporary.
Victor hadn't put much thought into their reactions, thinking they might just be a newlywed couple wanting to enjoy some alone time together.
However, on the other side, Finnick and Winnie had somewhat unpleasant expressions. Especially Finnick struggled to maintain a calm smile; he knew they were already married, and he had lost any chance with Sabrina. But when he heard the possibility of them having children, his genuine sorrow couldn't be hidden.
Winnie had been observing Finnick's expressions all along. Witnessing his sadness over another woman made her feel uncomfortable. Sabrina was already married, so why was Finnick fixated on her?
"Your marriage seems like a pretty happy one," Winnie said, unable to hide a hint of dissatisfaction in her tone. It sounded somewhat off, causing everyone to turn their focus on her. Winnie remained expressionless but slightly agitated.
Embarrassed, Finnick pulled her aside and signalled for her to stop speaking.
