Chapter 168 A Loveless Marriage
Only those in Marcus's close circle knew about his engagement to Delores as Marcus was a person of remarkable discretion. Even Sabrina who had known Marcus for some time didn't realize he was engaged all along.
Naturally, this impending marriage between Marcus and Delores was privy to only a select few.
Curtis shared the news with Sabrina on that night. Sabrina furrowed her brow in response, surprised that Marcus and Delores was finally taking this step.
"It seems Delores and Marcus have come to a conclusion. They've chosen to walk down the aisle. Yet, I can't shake the feeling that marriage might not be the best choice for them," mused Sabrina.
Upon hearing this, Curtis paused his keyboard taps and asked, "Why do you say so?"
Despite the long-standing acquaintance between Delores and Marcus, visible to the discerning eye was the lack of affection in their impending union. Marriage didn't always hinge on love; it could be practical or, in cases like his and Curtis's situation, necessitated by various factors.
However, Sabrina sensed that within this loveless marriage, Marucs might be the one giving more while Delores might not reciprocate adequately. Such one-sided efforts could be exhausting and draining as time passed.
"To make a marriage last, feelings alone aren't enough. I fear once the passion fades, will their shared memories be sufficient to sustain the marriage?" Sabrina expressed her concern.
Observing Sabrina's worried expression, Curtis couldn't help but feel bemused. After all, it was between Marcus and Delores, and he had no intention of meddling.
Knowing Marcus's unpredictable nature, today, he might propose, and tomorrow, he might whisk Delores away to choose wedding dresses. Marcus wouldn't involve Victor and Curtis in these affairs, so that left Sabrina as his likely choice of accompaniment.
"Regardless, this is their decision. Given their family backgrounds and the years they've known each other, calling off this marriage won't be easy," Curtis remarked.
What Curtis didn't mention was that their marriage appeared more like an alliance. Such unions often intertwined with familial interests, making disentanglement a tedious affair.
And even if the flames of passion were to wane someday, divorcing wouldn't be an option due to the multitude of entwined interests. If they ever did part ways, it would be because they had reached a point of no return or due to overwhelming complications.
In any case, it wasn't Sabrina's concern. Curtis had no intention of involving her further.
"Let it be. Don't dwell on this. I'm just informing you. If Marcus asks you for anything, decline. Since he's the one getting married, let him and Delores handle it themselves. Always seeking external aid won't help their relationship," Curtis advised.
This advice made Sabrina realize the futility of intervening in the affairs of a couple. It would be better for Marcus and Delores to resolve matters on their own.
"Can they really cultivate a bond? From Delores' demeanor..." Sabrina paused. Women could discern when someone was disinterested in a relationship. In this case, it wasn't that Delores wasn't interested in relationships; rather, she wasn't interested in Marcus.
"A few years back, during Delores' overseas studies, she had a relationship. It didn't last, and nobody knows the reasons. However, ever since, it seems Delores has been apprehensive about love. Perhaps the breakup affected her profoundly, leaving her unable to move on for a long time," Curtis shared.
Curtis knew little about the specifics, but it was evident that if there were any feelings between them, they wouldn't have waited this long. The fact that it had dragged on for so long clearly indicated a lack of mutual affection or perhaps unrequited love.
As Curtis mentioned this, Sabrina probably understood. Right now, in Delores's heart, there was someone else, someone whose position was even more significant than Marcus's.
This unattainable love, like a moonbeam, was sought after but unreachable, leaving one yearning for something beyond reach. If Marcus wished for his relationship with Delores to endure, there was a long road ahead, especially for him. How could he erase the memory of that person from Delores' heart?
Even if they got married, nothing would change.
"Poor Marcus, despite his cheerful facade, he's facing a tough situation," Sabrina remarked.
Seeing Sabrina saying this, Curtis didn't have much to say. Marcus's situation wasn't really that dire.
They had discussed such matters with Marcus before. Marcus had expressed his genuine desire to marry someone he genuinely liked, and that person was obviously Delores.
"Let them handle their own affairs. Stop worrying. Rest up; they're planning a bachelor party tomorrow, who knows how late it'll go?"
