Chapter 40
WADE’S POV
She was lighter than I remembered. Or maybe it was just in my mind.
I carried her down the stairs, her head lolling slightly against my shoulder. Our parents were out for a work trip and I didn't know who to call for help. I didn't even know what the hell was wrong with her.
Leslie groaned. Her fingers held on tightly to my shirt as if her body knew it needed to hold on to something.
“Easy,” I said. More to myself if I had to admit. “I’ve got you.”
I got her into my car and started driving. The entire drive to the hospital was torture. I would have been able to bear it if she just spoke to me.
I kept one hand on the steering wheel and the other on her thigh, needing myself to remember that she was still breathing and it was okay. She shifted a little in her seat and I kept glancing at her like if I looked away for too long, something might happen.
By the time we got there, I was moving on auto pilot.
