Chapter 679

The man trembled with fear, shuffling backward on his knees and frantically yelling, "Don't come any closer! I am one of you! I'm not Eastorian. Please don't kill me!" Matthew's tone was cold as he questioned, "Why did you send Wendy back?" The man quickly responded, "After Wendy left, Alan issued the order that anyone who enters the farm cannot leave without his permission." "What's your relationship with Alan?" The man hesitated momentarily before replying, "I'm his bodyguard, but I'm only an errand boy. I haven't done anything." Upon hearing this, Matthew raised the Nightwrath sword in his hand. "I just saw you stopping Wendy. What do you mean that you haven't done anything?" The man exclaimed in panic, "It was the boss' order! He declared that no one was allowed to enter or leave the farm without his approval. "But I didn't lay a hand on her. I only stopped her from leaving. I'm only doing this to earn a livelihood." Upon hearing this, Matthew realized the man was just trying to make ends meet. Hence, after some hesitation, he put down his sword. "Tell me something useful, and I'll spare your life." The man thought briefly before saying, "I overheard him discussing a plan. It didn't sound like it had anything to do with medicine, but it felt significant, like something about the future of the entire Eastorian population. That's all I know." His words made Matthew frown. "Do you know what it is about specifically?" At this moment, the man was shivering with fear and begged, "I really don't know. It was just something I happened to hear. Please spare me!" A cold glint flashed in Matthew's eyes as he kicked the man, sending him sliding several feet across the ground. "Get lost!" The man got to his feet and fled as quickly as he could. Then, Matthew slowly turned to face Wendy and said, "Now, it's time to settle things with you." Instantly, Wendy sank to her knees and pleaded, "I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have trusted that scoundrel. "I would most likely be dead by now without you. So, I will take whatever punishment you have for me!" Seeing her like this, Matthew found it difficult to punish her. "Do you not have anything else to say?" She reflected for a moment before saying, "What do you want to know? I will not keep anything back." "The chicken farm. Was it just about raising chickens to get close to Kingston?" His voice sounded frigid again. She seemed to recall something and answered, "No. It was primarily for the book 'Plague Compendium'. "Every time Kingston prescribed medicine for the sick chickens, Alan would take the formulas to study. The hens were never really treated. If it was, it was only a small portion to test the effects. Hence, tens of thousands of chickens died on the farm." Matthew was taken aback by the information and asked, "What were the results?" Wendy paused momentarily before responding, "Alan has a team of researchers. According to their findings, if mankind faced extinction due to an incurable epidemic, 'Plague Compendium' could greatly increase humans' survival rates and lessen the likelihood of human extinction." He was astonished by the high evaluation. He had always recognized the book's value, but this clarified its significance in a way he hadn't understood. Matthew was confident that more Eastorians would come for the book when Alan died. Then, he lifted his sword and placed it on Wendy's neck as she kneeled on the ground. "Yet, you tried to take it and offered it to the Eastorians despite knowing its value. Don't you think you deserve to die?" Suddenly, she raised her hand and began slapping her face. "I'm sorry! I was wrong!"
