Chapter 3812
Serenity burst out laughing. Quinn could not hold her laughter in either.
Julian wanted to laugh but stopped himself because he did not want Grandma May “getting revenge” on him.
Tania did not back down from her mother-in-law’s glare. Instead, she got more confident. “It’s useless glaring at me, Mom. I didn’t say anything wrong. You just didn’t have the chance to favor girls over boys. If you had a daughter or a granddaughter, you definitely would’ve shown favoritism.”
Since Grandma May did not have a girl to dote on, she had no choice but to love her sons and grandsons.
Grandma May swatted Tania lightly. She complained, “That’s because you all only gave birth to sons. Aren’t daughters more adorable? I wish you all could’ve had a daughter.
“Look at how cute Chloe is. I have the urge to kidnap her back whenever I see her. Liz is even treating me like a thief now. She’s afraid that I’d steal her great-granddaughter away. She even has a daughter.”
Grandma May was envious of Elizabeth the old Mrs. Johnson. She had a daughter and although she had no granddaughters, she had a great-granddaughter, Chloe. The little girl was adorable, easy to look after, and seldom cried.
It was Grandma May’s first time seeing such an easy baby in her entire life.
Tania muttered, “It’s not our fault. You don’t have a daughter yourself. Nothing beats having a daughter of your own. Why didn’t you adopt a daughter when you were young? Maybe we would’ve given birth to a daughter if you did.”
Grandma May replied, “Do you think I’ve never considered it? Back then, I had a friend who had a few daughters. I took a liking to one of them and wanted to adopt her. I did adopt her in the end, but she almost lost her life before half a year had passed. She kept falling sick and was in bad health.
“I had no choice but to return the girl to her biological mother. Mysteriously, she stopped falling sick a month later and got healthier. I refused to believe in my luck and tried taking in another friend’s daughter. However, that girl would get sick often and had to visit the doctor frequently as well.
“My friend was shocked and quickly took her daughter back. She said the York family can’t have a daughter, be it biological or adopted. I gave up entirely afterward.”
Grandma May knew that her in-laws up to two generations above them had had daughters. However, those daughters passed away at a young age as well.
Serenity said, “Maybe you didn’t know how to care for a daughter. You were probably extra cautious when taking care of baby girls and acted differently compared to when you took care of boys. However, being overprotective of children can bring undesirable consequences. They’ll have poor health and be very susceptible to illnesses.”
Grandma May was not as cautious as when she raised her sons.
Given her desperate desire for a little girl, she must have been extremely meticulous when looking after her. Unfortunately, that was not good for children.
In other words, she did not know how to look after girls.
Besides, Grandma May was busy developing a business with her husband when she was young. Given her busy schedule, there were times when her children might have been neglected.
While she was definitely careful with her children, a nanny could never be as conscientious. With that in mind, there were higher chances of something happening to the children.
If Grandma May had taken care of the girls just like how she did with her sons, Zachary would have had at least one aunt, even if she were adopted.
Grandma May said, “Really?”
She recalled how she treated the two girls with utmost care and compared it to how she raised her sons and grandsons. She sighed and said, “I guess I didn’t know how to raise a girl. I just wasn’t fated to have a daughter.”
If she had a great-granddaughter in the future, she would simply carry the baby girl and play with her. Her grandson and granddaughter-in-law could take care of the rest.
Indeed, the way the younger generation looked after their children was different.
“Seren must be hungry after waking up, Nana. She should eat something.”
Zachary changed the topic because he was worried Serenity might be pressured to give birth to a daughter if the conversation continued.
Grandma May and Tania said, “Go eat, Seren. Don’t let yourself go hungry.”
Grandma May even scolded Zachary, “You should’ve brought her to eat something, Zack. How could you let her starve? Pregnant women should eat small but frequent meals.”
