Chapter 3804
After, he added, “Dunc went to see Mom. He didn’t wait for me to come back and went ahead, but luckily, they’re coming back soon. He said he bought me a lot of new clothes and toys. Dad, Mom and Dunc are getting married, I heard it from Aunt Ser. He’s going to be my new dad. Dad, I’ll have two dads from now on,” Sonny said with a happy smile. He even held up two fingers to Hank and added, “Other kids only have one dad, but I have two dads.”
When Hank heard that Duncan had gone to visit Liberty and that the two were getting married soon, he felt bitterness in his heart, but he could not say anything.
Back then, he was the one who let go of Liberty first.
He was the one who had gone back on his vows and turned his back on their marriage first.
No matter how bitter he felt, he could only wish Liberty and Duncan happiness and joy. Even though he did not want to admit it, Hank knew that Duncan was a much better man than he was, and not just career-wise because even in relationships, Duncan was far more devoted than he was.
Hank sighed inwardly. Who could he blame? He could only blame himself for being unappreciative of what he had.
The moment he had achieved a little success, he started looking down on his first wife. It was said that a man who neglected his wife would never prosper for long. He was that man, and now he had ended up in this situation.
He was no longer a senior executive in a big company and no longer earning a high salary of hundreds of thousands a year. He could not even find another job; no company was willing to hire him for fear of offending Zachary. To make a living, he had to drive for a ride-hailing service.
It was like he had made the worst play with a good hand of cards.
If only… if only he had not looked down on Liberty, had not listened to his parents and sister’s persuasion, had continued to treat Liberty well like before, and treated Serenity like she was his own sister, then he would probably have a successful career and a happy family with a loving wife and son now.
His son would also not have to call someone else “Dad.”
“Sonny, do you like Duncan?”
Sonny nodded, “I like him. Dad, he isn’t a bad person. You should stop saying that—he’s not bad."
Sonny could tell the difference between good and bad people. When Liberty first met Duncan, Sonny was afraid of him. After getting to know him a little, though he was still a little scared, he knew Duncan was not a bad person. Children’s hearts were pure. They knew who was genuinely kind to them.
Hank’s smile was a bit forced as he admitted, “Yeah, he isn’t a bad person. I shouldn’t have spoken ill of him in front of you. Sonny, in the future, when you go to live with Dunc, you have to be a good boy. Listen to him, and don’t make him angry, or he might stop liking you.”
His son would have to live under his stepfather’s roof, and even though Duncan treated Sonny very well now and regarded him like his own, as Sonny’s biological father, Hank was still worried that his son would lose the favor Duncan had for him now or incur his dislike.
He was even more worried that Sonny would no longer be Liberty’s priority once she married Duncan. He feared that if Liberty had a second child after marrying Duncan, her scale of attention and love would tip in favor of the new child, and Sonny might not be treated well.
“Dad, Dunc won’t stop liking me, and I won’t make him angry. I’ll be good.” Sonny did not think Duncan would stop liking him because he was just so cute that everyone liked him and praised him when they met him—so who would dislike him?
Hank hugged his son tightly. After a long moment, he released Sonny and placed him on the ground, letting him stand on his own two feet before taking his hand and walking toward Serenity and her husband.
“If Duncan stops liking you and your mom’s too busy to take care of you, go look for your Aunt Serenity, okay?”
Serenity would never ignore Sonny. Compared to Liberty, Hank trusted his former sister-in-law more.
If Liberty had a child with Duncan in the future, he honestly could not guarantee that she would not favor the younger child. Plus, would Duncan still care for Sonny as much as when he had his own biological child?
