Chapter 18

*DONOVAN* The following morning, I walked into the dining room. There was no sign of that mischievous wife of mine. As I sat down and began to eat. There was still no sign of her. “Where’s Janelle?”I asked Joan. Joan eyed me. “Shouldn’t you know where your wife is?” I rolled my eyes.”Forget it.” Joan moved closer to me. “I know this marriage was sudden for you and it was something you didn’t want. But I have studied Janelle for the past few days and I’m sure she’s a good woman. I think she cares about you a lot. Yesterday, she wanted to know about your favorite meals, she even learnt how up to make coffee the exact way you like it.” I stared at Joan. She was so gullible. “Don’t be fooled by her, Joan. She’s up to no good.” I was already clear about the kind of woman she was. Recalling the soaked documents of last night, I stood up to go check it out. I had been mad about her actions and I couldn’t work anymore so I retired to bed. I would have to take those documents back to the company and print new copies. I walked into the study and saw that my desk was organized. Joan must have done that. I walked up to the desk and saw that there was a handwritten translated document on it. Ipicked it up and saw the delicate handwriting. I frowned and thought, "Was this written by that woman?" Could she speak the language of Argan? I could not believe it. Just as I put down the document and wanted to ask her clearly, a note fell out of the document. It said: "I’m sorry, I didn't get your permission before I entered your study room. Last night, because of me, your document got wet. Therefore, I tried my best to help you repair it. The language of Argan was not easy to learn. I translated it into English so that you could see it. It was my compensation for ruining your document. Janelle” Holding the note in my hand, I looked at the ten translated written papers. I suddenly felt less angry about her entering my study room without permission and about last night. I stared at the delicate handwriting and suddenly became curious about this woman. How could she know such an unpopular language? I put down the note and went to the company with the documents. ************** *JANELLE* When I woke up, it was already noon, Joan had prepared the dishes for her. I was a little embarrassed because she got up too late. Joan smiled and said, "We didn't have any visitor here before. Young master never sleeps late. After you started living here, the house seems to be more lively." I smiled and said, "Didn't Laura come here often before?" Joan stared at me, skeptically as if wanting to read why I had asked that question. I just asked casually with no purpose. I instantly regretted it after asking. "Not so often. Young master used to be cold to her—" Joan was puzzled. "Why did he change his attitude towards her after the trip?" I recalled Joan had told me last night that he had no interest in her for so many years. She still seem to be in disbelief by their sudden relationship. I thought, "It's said that women's thoughts were complex, maybe it was the same as men's mind." Especially someone like Donovan . I accepted the fact I wasn’t getting the job as an interpreter. I didn't want to be idle like this. I had to find a stable job. I could not take my mother's things back for the time being. I didn't have much money left because I refuse to ask Donovan or anyone money since I got here. And so I had to get a job before I go broke. ************* After lunch, I went out. It was really difficult to find a job for a girl like me, who had no education background or working experience. After being rejected for several times, I could only find some low-end jobs. An upscale restaurant was looking for a waiter. This job didn't require an education background, as long as I was smart enough and responded quickly. Now I needed money, I went in to apply for the job. I didn't get the bachelor certificate but I had gone to high school, so I talked and acted in a logical way and responded quickly. The restaurant manager asked me to come to work tomorrow. Seeing that I had secured this job, I was in a better mood. I came out of the restaurant and walked alone on the roadside. The sun was setting in the west, leaving a touch of red on the horizon. The red light reflected the street and a long shadow of me. I was alone, which made her feel a little lonely. "Janelle." Hearing that name, I turned my head. Marco ran over from the opposite side of the road. "I thought my eyes were blurry," he said with a smile. "Doctor Marco." I was also surprised to see him again. "You’re still in town?" He looked at me and wanted to say something but stopped. "I'm working here now." I remembered that when he was in the hospital that day, the Director asked him to work here in person. I guess he accepted. “They pay you a decent salary, don’t they?" I let out with some envy. Because I needed to take care of my mother and sister, I couldn’t afford to go to college. It was really difficult to find a high-paying job now. Marco smiled gently and said, "Yes, it's good. But I didn’t stay for the pay. I’m staying for something else.”
