Margaret.
I knew it was her the moment I heard her voice mingling with Anya’s, like the hiss of a snake coiling just beneath the sweet tone of my friend’s words. She had been here all along, hadn’t she? Watching, waiting. Hoping for a chance to strike with her venom and hatred.
Anya’s body—no, Margaret wearing Anya’s body—stood slowly. Her movements were smooth and graceful. Those white eyes swept over each of us, but lingered on me the longest.
“Well, well, well,” Margaret said through Anya’s mouth. “Look at you all. So desperate. So pathetic. Did you really think a silly little crystal would save you?”
“Get out of her,” Alexander growled, rising to his feet. “Get out of Anya right now.”
Margaret laughed, and the sound was all wrong coming from Anya’s throat. “Or what? You’ll defy me? You know you can’t do that. Your son is still recovering, isn’t he?”
