Chapter 541
Jessie had not expected Cyrus to be so stubborn. Despite being at a disadvantage, he appeared like he could easily assert control over the Sykes family.
Given Cyrus' firm stance, Jessie knew there was no point in acting as the mediator. She decided to just accept his treatment.
As for trying to gather information about the young lord of the Hippocrates Sect, she had no idea where to start.
Cyrus was too clever, making it impossible for Jessie to extract useful intel. Hence, she could only wait for her health to improve and then resort to her final strategy—charming him.
After they finished their meal, Jessie went downstairs to rest. Her second round of treatment was scheduled for this afternoon.
Zoey was still worried. "Let Hank send and pick up Mira from school in the future. I'm concerned the Sykes family will resort to desperate measures."
"They won't for now. But since they dare to use venom, we must be cautious. Alright, we'll let Hank do it," Cyrus replied.
As soon as those words escaped his lips, Mira's eyes lit up with excitement. "That's great! All my classmates want to meet Mr. Monster."
Rachel, who was on duty downstairs, rushed upstairs. "Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, the mayor's office just called. They said the new mayor's wife wants to visit a patient here and told us to prepare for her arrival," she reported.
Cyrus chuckled. "What's there to prepare? Let her come if she wants."
"But the mayor's secretary insists that we close for the day and not allow any unauthorized people in," Rachel added.
Even Zoey grew irritated after hearing that.
"They're acting like they own the place. But this is a medical center, and we're focused on healing and saving lives."
Cyrus slammed his cutlery on the table and snapped, "Does she think this is a hotel? Tell them Innerzen Medical Center is dedicated to saving lives, and we'll never close our doors. They can come if they want."
"Yes, sir."
Rachel knew Cyrus would never agree to that. Thus, she relayed his message to the mayor's secretary, Colin Bennett, who Robert had brought from Centuria.
Of course, he was furious.
"Does Mr. Johnson even know the rules? Mrs. Jones will be visiting Innerzen Medical Center. Who will take responsibility if something happens to her?" Colin questioned.
Rachel answered, "Of course, you'll be responsible. We're a medical center, so there are no assassins. Besides, we're not obligated to protect any big shots."
"Seems to me that Innerzen Medical Center is asking to be shut down."
Rachel responded, "You can tell Mr. Johnson that yourself."
"He's nothing but a mere director of a medical center!"
Having said that, Colin slammed the phone down.
Cecilia, who was listening nearby, let out a sigh before commenting, "Looks like trouble is just around the corner."
"With Mr. Johnson's influence in Jorsproburgh, I don't think the new mayor can make much of an impact," said Rachel.
"The new mayor tried to make a grand entrance, but Cyrus immediately put him in his place. I'm sure he knows where he stands now."
…
Although Cyrus knew that Megan was coming to visit Jessie, he did not change the treatment schedule. Instead, he proceeded on time.
Jessie had Cyrus' best interests at heart, so she suggested, "Why don't we do the treatment at night? If Aunt Megan sees me suffering so much, she'll cause trouble."
"You'll be howling at night, and other patients won't be able to rest," Cyrus retorted.
"Pfft! I don't howl! But don't blame me for not warning you."
After saying that, Jessie lay down and removed her pants under the blanket. She then closed her eyes, bit down on the mouthguard, and clutched the pillow tightly with both hands, portraying a sense of despair.
Before Cyrus even started, beads of sweat had already formed at her temples. Her entire body tensed with anxiety.
"I thought you were tough. Do you need pain relief this time?" Cyrus inquired.
Jessie nodded vigorously in response. She did not want to endure the same agony as last time. And so, Cyrus performed acupuncture on the surrounding acupoints to alleviate the pain during treatment.
"This will only lessen the pain, not eliminate it. Be mentally prepared," he cautioned.
Jessie nodded again before taking a deep breath.
…
Meanwhile, at the entrance of Innerzen Medical Center, ten black cars arrived early. They were ready to disperse the 2,000 patients waiting outside to be assigned their queue numbers.
"The mayor's wife is here today. No unauthorized personnel are allowed near Innerzen Medical Center," the guard captain announced through a megaphone.
