Chapter 535
Jessie didn't say anything. She and Hazel were like sisters. Strictly speaking, if Hazel married James, they would be sisters-in-law.
She didn't want the Hudson family to get into trouble, but Jessie knew this was Evelyn or Owen pulling the strings.
Evelyn was willing to sacrifice her own granddaughter to test Cyrus. She wasn't afraid of Cyrus; she was afraid of the young lord of the Hippocrates Sect backing him up.
So, Evelyn was probably planning to take down Cyrus in the safest way possible.
As this thought crossed Jessie's mind, she couldn't help but shudder.
Could it be that the Sykes family was really using venom? Was Evelyn trying to cover something up?
It didn't make sense to go through all this trouble if the Sykes family wasn't desperate. They wouldn't move against Chandler for no reason. The Hudson family wasn't one to be messed with.
Zoey glanced at Jessie and knew she had acquiesced to Cyrus' suspicion.
Hazel had once mentioned that Chandler was not on board with the Sykes family's plot against Cyrus. As a result, Chandler fell victim to their schemes.
"The Hudson family is a family of officials. How did the Sykes family manage to push Chandler out of his position?" Zoey asked.
"The Sykes family is a prestigious family from Centuria with a history spanning a thousand years. Their foundation far surpasses that of the Hudson family.
"Even though they don't hold official positions, they consider themselves the backbone of Summerland, giving them substantial influence within the government," Cyrus explained.
"Mr. Hudson has only been in Jorsproburgh for a short while, and he's already being reassigned. Let's hope it's a promotion." Zoey sighed.
She used to worry about small family matters, but now, she was dealing with influential figures. This made her realize how harsh the world could be and how challenging it was for Cyrus to protect the medical community in Jorsproburgh.
Soon, Chandler and Hazel arrived. After Chandler had received the call about his transfer, the first person he came to say goodbye to was Cyrus.
Hazel and Jessie were close friends in Centuria. They would always go shopping and hang out together. Even after moving to Jorsproburgh, they stayed in touch every day.
But now, Hazel didn't greet Jessie. Instead, she smiled and said to Zoey, "Zoey, I smell the sweet scent of tremella soup. Is there any left?"
"Yes, I'll get some for you," Zoey replied.
"Great! I'll have two bowls since I won't be able to have it again in the future," Hazel responded.
Hearing this, Zoey felt a pang of sadness. She was quite fond of Hazel.
Although Hazel had feelings for Cyrus, she knew her boundaries and never let her feelings show.
"Cyrus, I bought this dress for Mira," Hazel said, handing him a bag. Inside were a pair of shoes and a dress.
Cyrus looked at them and said, "Mira is still young. You bought such a high-end brand. It's a waste."
"It's okay. Consider them a gift from me. She can wear them for her kindergarten graduation performance," Hazel said.
Zoey brought over the tremella soup for Chandler and Hazel.
Chandler sipped his bowl of soup, maintaining his stoic expression. Years of political experience had taught him to mask his emotions well.
Cyrus didn't ask many questions. He just watched them finish their soup quietly.
Jessie, feeling out of place, said, "I'll go back to my room."
"Go ahead," Cyrus replied.
After Jessie left, Hazel asked, "Cyrus, is she alright? She looks so sickly. Is it a serious illness?"
"You seem very concerned about her," Cyrus said.
"The Sykes family is ruthless. They think they can manipulate everything, and they even dare to target my dad. But Jessie's different; she's kind-hearted. We've been close since we were kids. Who knows what the future holds, though?" Hazel said.
"Don't worry, it's not a terminal illness. I'm treating her," Cyrus replied.
"Alright." Hazel nodded. Then, she suddenly burst into tears. "I don't want to leave Jorsproburgh. I don't want to leave you all."
Zoey pulled Hazel into her arms, comforting her. "Let's go to the room and look at the dresses. Let your dad and Cyrus talk, okay?"
"Okay," Hazel agreed.
Cyrus poured coffee for Chandler and asked, "Mr. Hudson, where are you being reassigned?"
Chandler smiled and shook his head. "It's a promotion, I suppose. I'll be the prefectural governor of southern Gressland. It's quite a distance. I'm not sure when we'll meet again."
"Southern Gressland?" Cyrus raised an eyebrow. That was the most chaotic place in Summerland.
