I hated the way hope surged in my chest when a knock sounded on my bedroom door hours later. I hated how badly I ached for it to be Caleb coming to check on me, to apologize for getting distracted by someone who didn’t matter, to tell me Jessica was gone and that he was here to make love to me, then move me officially into his home and buy me a big, shiny ring to show everyone that we belonged together.
When I opened the door, Daniel was on the other side.
“Am I that much of a disappointment?” he asked, taking in my expression.
“Sorry,” I grumbled. “It’s not you.”
“Okay…” he said, hesitating. “Is this a bad time?”
I sighed, knocking my door open wider. “Not really. Hey, what do you think of moving in here with me?”
Daniel froze halfway across the threshold. “Excuse me?”
I flopped on my bed. “This apartment has two rooms. You could move into the second one.”
