‘Believe it or not, I did love Kieran once,’ Rainey said. ‘Without you, we’d probably still be happily married.’
I sneered. ‘So it’s my fault?’
She shrugged and said nothing, but her face said everything.
‘What about Kenneth? And Carl Foster? They both died for you. Did you send them to their deaths by claiming to love them, too?’
Rainey showed no remorse.
She just smiled at me. ‘You’ll never understand how I feel.’
‘Please, go ahead and enlighten me,’ I said sardonically.
‘You think your life’s bad just because you were adopted? Compared to me, you lived in pure bliss.’
‘Are you going to tell me a sob story of your childhood?’ I shook my head. ‘I’m not buying it.’
‘It’s not a sob story!’ Rainey grew agitated. ‘It’s the truth! You were pampered. You had doting parents and babysitters and playmates. You had three square meals a day and a roof over your head and a warm bed to sleep in. You lived like a princess. But you are not even their real child! But I was!’
