Chapter 3

After my week-long rest at the hospital, I brought Saoirse with me as I dropped by the hospital to process my resignation. "Olivia, why are you resigning so suddenly? Did you encounter any trouble during work?" The principal, Nathan West, was still trying to convince me to stay. I shook my head and smiled. "I received an invitation from a project that's being conducted abroad, so I decided to give it a shot." Nathan's worries immediately morphed into admiration. "Is that so! I knew someone as outstanding as you would have plenty of opportunities! This is big news! Does Professor Frestin know?" I shook my head again, the smile still fixed on my face. Before the time was ripe, I wasn't going to breathe a word about what was going on between Jamie and me to another person. Fortunately, Nathan didn't press the issue. He came to his own conclusion and was all smiles when he asked, "Are you planning to give Professor Frestin a surprise? The two of you are so sweet to each other! "Everyone on campus knows that Professor Frestin is obsessed with his wife. He ends his classes at 5:30 pm on the dot, saying that he needs to rush home to prepare dinner for his wife. "You've been married for five years, but the two of you still act like newlyweds. It makes everyone so envious." I had been tidying up my documents when my hand froze in mid-air. After I became pregnant, I spent most of my days alone in the house during those nine months. I would also go to my pregnancy check-ups by myself and had to endure the depressive feelings that clung to me during the second trimester of my pregnancy alone. Jamie stopped coming home a long time ago. He wasn't preparing dinner for me at all. The identity of the "wife" he boasted about making dinner for was all too obvious. After all, who else could it be if I wasn't the "wife" in question? But it wasn't the right time to expose his lies just yet. I smiled as I chatted with Nathan for a little while more before packing up my things and taking my leave. I drove back home with Saoirse in tow, but when I tried to enter the password to unlock the front door, I was met with countless errors.
