Chapter 2
I felt as if a string had been drawn taut inside my brain, making a piercing and incessant buzzing noise.
"What are you doing?" I shouted. "Let go of her!"
My lower body felt like it was tearing in two after my difficult labor. Indescribable pain radiated from my wound that had been stitched together with dozens of sutures. I knew that my wound had ripped open again, but I couldn't be bothered. I limped toward Daisy Lorenzo and lunged at her when I got close.
Daisy let out a bloodcurdling shriek at the same time Saoirse wailed loudly. In the next second, the door to my ward was kicked open.
Jamie rushed toward us and kicked me aside before pulling Daisy into his embrace. "Daisy, what happened? Are you okay?"
He then turned to me and roared, "Olivia! I knew you were planning something nefarious since you agreed so quickly to getting a divorce. You were just waiting for an opportunity all along!"
I clutched Saoirse to my chest tightly. Jamie's kick had sent me soaring a few feet across the room. My back had collided hard against the wall. I could only let out pained whimpers at that moment.
Daisy, whose shoulders had been trembling violently as she cradled her stomach and sobbed into Jamie's chest, was looking at me with a smile on her face.
"Professor Frestin, when I woke up in the middle of the night to use the restroom, I heard a baby crying when I passed by Mrs. Frestin's room.
"I didn't want the baby to disturb Mrs. Frestin's rest, so I entered her room of my own accord, trying to coax the baby to stop crying.
"But Mrs. Frestin accused me of being the reason that you wanted to divorce her. She said she was going to push me and the baby inside me out of the window!" she defended.
Jamie trusted every single word that came out of Daisy's mouth. Disbelief was etched all over his face as he turned to look at me. He didn't give me a chance to explain myself before he carried Daisy up.
"I should've known from the start that you were rotten to the core! A despicable person like you has no right to receive postpartum recovery treatment here on my dime. You deserve to grovel on the streets!" he snapped.
Then, he carried Daisy out of my room after he said his piece. Saoirse was still wailing in my arms, but Jamie didn't even ask a single question regarding her well-being.
A large group of security guards stormed into the room before I could register what was happening. They grabbed me and tossed me out of the hospital.
The early morning wind was biting against my wound. Saoirse had run out of tears to cry. My blood continued to drip to the floor.
I wanted to get to the emergency room first to redo my stitches before doing anything else. But I suddenly recalled that Jamie owned half of the shares in the private hospital looming before me. The security guards even pasted a warning that had a photo of me at the entrance.
"This person is forbidden from entering this hospital to receive treatment," was the note on the warning.
It was the small hours of the morning, so there weren't many cars around. When a cab finally stopped for me, it immediately sped off after the driver noticed fresh blood dripping from between my legs.
With no other options, I wrapped the hospital gown tighter around myself and cradled Saoirse close to me before beginning my three-mile trek toward the nearest public hospital. At the very least, I managed to get my wound restitched at the public hospital.
The next morning after I got my sutures done, I sent a message to the school, announcing my resignation. I then dialed a number that I had memorized since long ago.
"Mr. Holt, I've decided to join the project that you mentioned to me before."
