Chapter 91 No Worries

Upon hearing the voice behind him, Marcus felt uneasy. Just moments ago, he told Sabrina to keep Jacob's sudden appearance a secret from Curtis. And now, Curtis had returned unexpectedly. What rotten luck! "Nothing. It's a little secret between Victor and me. Don't ask, we won't say even if you ask." Marcus certainly wouldn't tell Curtis what had just happened, but he was worried that Curtis might have seen Jacob on his way back. "By the way, did you see anyone on your way back just now?" he cautiously asked, and Sabrina became nervous too, looking at Curtis. Curtis cast Marcus a strange look. "Who were you hoping I met on the road?" Marcus quickly put on a smile and said, "It was just a casual conversation, forget it. Well, I'll leave now. I need to find Victor. I just remembered there's something I have to deal with. You guys enjoy your dinner." Marcus left right away, leaving Curtis and Sabrina standing there, facing each other, not knowing what to do. Sabrina didn't know what to say. She turned around and went straight into the kitchen to prepare dinner. After a while, Curtis walked into the kitchen. Sabrina immediately tensed up. She prayed that Curtis wouldn't ask about what happened just now, as she really didn't know how to explain it. "I saw Jacob on the way back. I assume you already know who he is?" Sabrina paused, not knowing what to say. She turned to look at Curtis awkwardly. "I didn't probe for details. It's just that Daniel shared some information, and Marcus was keen to keep you in the dark about Jacob's appearance. He even cautioned me not to tell you. Don't worry, I will honor our agreement," she said. "No need to be so nervous. Jacob and I have our differences, and you were bound to find out sooner or later. So, it's no big deal that you know now." Curtis was unusually calm, and it made Sabrina feel somewhat uneasy. "Daniel mentioned your bad history with Jacob since childhood, and Marcus also said..." Realizing she shouldn't have said some things, Sabrina trailed off without completing her words. Curtis observed her silence as she continued preparing dinner. After a while, he couldn't resist breaking the silence, "When I was a child, I had no worries, so no matter how Jacob messed around or played his games in front of our parents, it didn't bother me. It wasn't until adulthood that Jacob, that fool, started coveting things that weren't rightfully his." Sabrina couldn't help but feel a bitter sting. How could a child not care? A parent's love and guidance were pivotal in shaping a child's character. "So, you truly didn't care?" Sabrina inquired. Curtis could claim a carefree childhood, but both of them knew he wasn't inherently cold-hearted. "I will handle Jacob's matter properly. Just don't tell Grandpa. I don't want him to worry." Sabrina felt helpless at his request. Caught in the middle, she found herself in an awkward predicament. "Daniel told me not to tell you about what happened today, and now you're telling me not to keep a secret from him. Can't you two just agree on something? I'm stuck in the middle, and it puts me in a really awkward position." Sabrina looked genuinely troubled. Curtis looked at her expression and suddenly burst into laughter. He hadn't seen Jacob for many years, and although he could remain calm upon seeing him once more, his mood was still affected. When he had returned earlier, everyone was considerate of his feelings, and no one dared to say much. However, Sabrina's animated expression lifted a bit of the heaviness from his heart. "Why are you laughing? I could've been spared from this knowledge. But no, you just had to tell me. I really didn't want to know about all this. I'm afraid of the complications." "Well, tough luck. The more you fear something, the more likely it is to find you. So, being afraid of trouble won't help," Curtis said casually, leaving Sabrina stunned. She stared at him in disbelief. "Are you for real? Everyone is dealing with this on your behalf. Honestly, it's baffling how I got dragged into this mess. But you need to tell me, what should I do if I run into Jacob next time? Marcus's warning scared me. If he approaches me, should I ignore him or not?" Though Sabrina considered it unlikely, if the brothers' relationship was as strained as it seemed, she might indeed be dragged into the conflict. Curtis was slightly taken aback. He hadn't considered this possibility before, but now he had a wife, even if only in name. He had a responsibility toward her. "If he does come looking for you, just give me a call. You don't have to entertain him. The bond between us brothers is shallower than the bond between us as a couple." Sabrina chuckled, rolled her eyes, and returned to cooking. This was the first time she had heard someone describe a bond in such terms. "Are you upset?" Seeing Sabrina silent, Curtis struggled to discern her emotions. "Not upset, just a bit surprised. Your family is not as picture-perfect as I imagined. I'd only heard Daniel mention that your parents haven't returned from abroad, but there's all this complexity that I hadn't predicted." Sabrina had a feeling that the more intertwined she and Curtis became, the more challenging it would be to extricate herself later. She wasn't afraid of trouble per se; she was just wary of their relationship growing more complicated.
