Chapter 81 Curtis's Successful Deception

Barry didn't respond to Curtis but carefully considered the feasibility of the matter in his mind. Apart from being caught in a large sum of debt, he was quite capable. Barry had been able to attend university back in the day solely because of his intelligence. The games he developed received recognition from his teachers. They even said that if he persevered in this field, his future would be promising. Barry did indeed create several successful games, earning significant achievements. However, as he began to turn arrogant. The games he developed later weren't up to par and he became dejected. Barry's arrogance had led to his downfall, and he realized that his days were getting worse. Curtis's words managed to pique Barry's interest. However, due to his past failures, Barry was hesitant to try again, fearing the possibility of failure. "One's talent is innate. With your innate talent and the opportunity presented to you, bringing in the success you deserve depends on your attitude and not the platform I can provide," Curtis's words struck a chord with Barry. Reflecting on his past successes, Barry realized they had been achieved through his exceptional talent and passion. However, the subsequent failures made him dissatisfied with his work. He couldn't expect others to appreciate his creations when he himself wasn't satisfied. "I won't hide it from you, there is a significant income gap between Sabrina and me, though it may not be apparent. If you succeed, it will boost Sabrina's confidence," Curtis said. Barry understood that a successful marriage required more than just love. Both partners needed to progress together, or one would be left behind, leading to an eventual failure. If he could succeed in his venture, it would secure his sister's future, and Curtis's words were aimed at helping them avoid marital issues. "Alright, I'll give it a try. But you have to promise me you won't tell Sabrina about this. I don't want her to get worried," Barry said. Barry was no longer as nervous as when he had entered the apartment, and Curtis was pleased with this transformation. He had initially thought Barry to be a stubborn guy, but now he saw that Barry was capable of thinking clearly. "Alright, try your best. Take this business card. You can contact them when you're ready. As for the 100,000-dollar interest that you owe, Sabrina knows a good lawyer from our company's legal department." Barry was taken aback. Didn't Curtis mention that he would loan him the money to repay the debt? Why was he asking him to consult a lawyer now? "Do you really plan to give 100,000 dollars to that loan shark for nothing?" Curtis asked. Barry shook his head. Of course, he would prefer to keep such a huge sum of money for himself. "Okay, I'll call Sabrina later." Curtis nodded. He had one more question for Barry. "By the way, what's the deal with you and Ada? You better tell me. If you make my wife angry, I won't let you off the hook." Curtis's words were somewhat ambiguous, and Sabrina, who was hiding in the bedroom, blushed. Luckily, she had a place to hide, as it would be too embarrassing for her to face them. Barry looked a little uneasy as he began explaining the situation, "Actually, I didn't lie about taking Grandpa for medical treatment. However, his condition wasn't that bad, that's when I veered off course and started… you know… That's also where I met Ada. She always believed I could..." Barry's voice grew softer as he realized something was amiss. Curtis remained silent, not giving any hints. "Fuck! I need to find Ada first. I'll talk to you about the rest when I come back." Barry, visibly angry, stood up. Reluctant as he was to admit it, he realized he had been deceived. Curtis also got up and said, "Alright, but don't forget to call Sabrina and explain to her about the loan shark issue." Barry nodded and left the apartment. After he left, Sabrina finally emerged from the bedroom. She looked at Curtis in amazement. She had not expected him to come up with such a motivating approach. It was more effective than forcing Barry to pay back the money. She realized that if Barry could succeed in developing the new game, it would give his career a real boost. He would become engrossed in his work, and in the process, he would forget about gambling. At that moment, Sabrina felt a solid hope for their family's future. "Thank you so much. If not for you, I wouldn't know how to deal with this. By the way, how did you come out with that bit about the gaming company?" Sabrina was worried Curtis would have to owe someone else a favor for introducing Barry to work at that gaming company, and she knew that favors could lead to trouble. "Didn't you know? Our company is looking to partner up with gaming companies, but we're still looking around. The gaming company I recommended to Barry has great potential but the owner isn't very reliable. So, I'm not just helping Barry, I'm also looking to benefit our company." With Curtis's explanation, Sabrina felt more at ease. It seemed that their company was genuinely interested in collaborating with the gaming company. "This game that targets women groups has a lot of potential for sales. The company evaluated it and believes it yield high profits if it succeeds. That's why they don't want to give up. Barry seems like a trustworthy person." With the additional clarification, Sabrina's concerns were alleviated. "You're really amazing. I thought you were just deceiving Barry earlier," she said. Curtis chuckled. How could it not be seen as a form of deception? If he hadn't used that approach, Barry wouldn't have considered going back to developing games, let alone taking on this project. Thankfully, Barry had decided to give it a try. Otherwise, he would likely still be preoccupied with figuring out how to make quick money through gambling.
