Scarlett's POV
"You disgust me, Alexander."
The chains bit into my wrists each time I moved. My skin was already rubbed raw, the metal slick with a mixture of my sweat and blood, but I pulled anyway, refusing to be still. I would not let him think he had already broken me, that I had complied with what he wanted.
Alexander crouched in front of me, his broad shoulders blocking the dim candlelight. "You still haven't given up yet? I told you—I will spend the rest of my life here with you."
I looked at him in disgust. "I'd rather die than spend my whole life with you."
His hands—the same hands that had once shielded me from rogues, that had once held me in a way that made me feel safe after witnessing my father's death—were now a mockery of tenderness.
The chains clanged whenever I struggled, whenever I moved, and I could even feel blood drip from the wounds on my wrist, but my fury far outweighed the pain.
