Chapter 642 Neither Of Them Moved

The orphanage’s layout came to mind like it was engraved in his bones. Zayn then walked into the orphanage slowly. The workers at the entrance came and went. They were dripping with sweat in the early summer sun. When they saw a good-looking man in a suit walking inside, they were surprised. The well-dressed Zayn and this shabby little orphanage were extraordinarily mismatched. Zayn avoided a group of people who were carrying tables, chairs, and benches. He then passed through the slightly cramped gate to the orphanage’s courtyard. Unexpectedly, he saw a familiar figure standing not far from him, staring at a small tree in front. This slim figure gradually overlapped with the little girl in his memories. It was an unexpected encounter, but also reasonable. Zayn stood still for a moment until a man with a slight accent said from behind, "Excuse me, please give way." The workers were about to move the next batch of items. Zayn subconsciously dodged to the side. The woman who had been standing with her back towards him heard this sound and turned her head back, just in time to meet Zayn's gaze. Once she turned around, Zayn could see that Lindsey had been staring intently at a small acacia tree that was in bloom. The tree was still small and was about the same height as Lindsey, but it already had a few clusters of acacia flowers at the top. They were white and lovely. The sweet scent of acacia blossoms lingered in the air as the two of them looked at each other with a group of busy workers moving items between them. For a few seconds, neither of them moved or spoke. After the group of workers between them left, Zayn walked up and stood in front of Lindsey. He saw the woman who only reached his chin and said in a rare soft tone, "When did you come?" "I just got here." Lindsey tilted her head slightly and looked into Zayn's eyes frankly. Zayn nodded and tried to create conversation. "Why did you suddenly come over?" Lindsey rolled her eyes at him and retorted. "Why did you come?" Although she said so, Lindsey took out her phone, unlocked it, and stuffed it into Zayn's hand. Zayn looked down at her phone. The screen displayed the local news. There was an article this morning about the reconstruction of the orphanage. Lindsey probably rushed over as soon as she saw the news. “You saw this news too?” Lindsey saw that Zayn finished reading the article and took her phone back. She then asked him in a calm voice that was rare lately. However, after asking Zayn this question, Lindsey thought that it was a little strange because this meant that she and Zayn had a tacit understanding, and they both cared a lot about the existence of the orphanage. Luckily, Zayn shook his head and said, "No, the current dean of the orphanage told me that they’re tearing down the orphanage, so I came to check it out." Lindsey looked at him in surprise. "Why would the director tell you specifically?" Zayn lowered his gaze to meet Lindsey’s large round eyes. He quickly averted his gaze to the small acacia blossoms and said vaguely, “We’ve been in contact all these years.” Lindsey nodded gently and did not probe further. In the end, Zayn looked at the flowers for a while and proposed, "Let's take a walk. It's been a long time since I've been here." She did not refuse and nodded. "Sure, I haven't been in here for a long time too." When Lindsey was in a bad mood, she often stood at the entrance of the orphanage to find a moment of peace, but she never came inside. Lindsey had spent most of her childhood in the orphanage. Even though they were poor and their lives were not luxurious, that was indeed Lindsey’s most carefree and lively time of her life. Whenever she came back, she wanted to find the happiness she once had. The orphanage was dilapidated, but it was a huge area with classrooms, dorms, a cafeteria, and a small two-story library. Lindsey and Zayn walked aimlessly side by side. The tables and chairs from the classrooms had been removed, leaving only two blackboards in the front and back. There were a few scattered words on the blackboard and some childish doodles. They stood in the doorway and watched for a while. Lindsey suddenly laughed like she was caught in some kind of memory. "Do you remember that when you first came here, you refused to go anywhere, not even to class? You even fought with the older kids under that blackboard!" She smiled at Zayn with curved eyes. "I didn't remember it wrong, did I?" Zayn looked at her somewhat helplessly. The curvature in his eyes was warm. "You clearly got it wrong. He was the one who grabbed something from me, so I just pushed him to the ground and beat him up." "Yeah, right." Lindsey glanced at him sideways. "Nonsense. You didn’t talk to anyone back then and he just wanted to talk to you, but you thought he was taking your things, so you both got into a fight." "Also..." Lindsey looked a little smug as she said, "I think your memory’s foggy. You didn’t beat him up, you both got into a fight and you were punched in the face!" The truth about what happened then was revealed, so Zayn's face turned glum and the corner of his lips twitched. He turned around and left Lindsey behind him in this dark place. Zayn looked annoyed. Lindsey shook her head and smiled, then said loudly, "Hey! Are you really that petty to get angry over such a trivial matter?" He did not speak and only smirked. Zayn was walking in front and Lindsey followed behind him, laughing as she talked. For a moment, it seemed that time had turned back to twenty years ago. Zayn was a teenager with a wound on his face and was limping away, but he looked so fierce like he could kill anyone who got in his way. It even scared off some of the older kids. Everyone back then was afraid of him and shivered at his glance. Only Lindsey was not afraid and just followed behind him, laughing and talking. Later, she even dared to go up to Zayn and tug on his shirt. When Zayn turned around, Lindsey timidly let go of his shirt and blinked her large eyes at him. "Hey, do you want to tell the dean? That big dude will certainly tell the dean. You guys got into a fight and his injuries looked more serious...when the time comes, the dean will surely punish you for it." The young Zayn was like a lone wolf. He swept a glance over her fingers and his gaze landed on her big round eyes. Just now, he thought that she was not afraid of him because she grabbed his shirt. Now that he saw her curled-up fingers, he sneered in his heart, ‘So you’re afraid of me, huh? Everyone’s scared of me and thinks that I’m an alien. I hate everyone!’
