Chapter 180 Not Meant To Be
Lindsey's heart was flooded with some strange feelings. Did Allie not want her to hear her conversation?
Although Lindsey had no intention of listening in on other people's phone calls, Allie's behavior was too odd.
At that moment, the door suddenly opened from the inside.
Allie looked at Lindsey aggrieved and complained, "You still know to come back? You left me here alone last night. Do you know how worried I was for you?"
This tone was completely different from the harshness of her voice over the call earlier.
"Allie, I’m sorry. I accidentally fell asleep last night." Lindsey took Allie's hand and was apologetic. She then asked, "Were you on the phone with your brother just now? Did he make you upset?"
Lindsey thought that Allie was her friend, so she just asked straightforwardly when she was curious about something. Otherwise, a gap would gradually form between them.
Allie’s eyes panicked for a split second. She closed the door and turned to Lindsey. “You heard it? My brother called earlier and we quarreled.
"By the way, are you okay? Last night, Zayn Guggenheim took you away. I was really worried and came to look for you, but he won’t let you go. I was so angry."
Allie said with a pout, looking extra childish.
"I'm fine." Lindsey frowned and added, "I don't remember how I met Zayn last night and even stayed with him all night."
Allie's eyes widened this time, full of surprise. "You didn't know? Zayn called the resort doctor last night and wondered if someone had drugged you, but it turned out that you were just asleep."
When she said that, Lindsey also realized that she seemed to have fallen asleep extra early last night and also had a heavy sleep.
Seeing Lindsey deep in thought, Allie said, "The hot springs here have a soothing and tranquilizing effect. Soaking more can also be good for your beauty and health."
When she said this, Lindsey also agreed and said, "Yeah, it's probably because of the hot springs yesterday."
Later, Allie told Lindsey about Zayn's actions against Shaun last night. While Lindsey was not surprised by it because this was Zayn's usual style, she still felt that Zayn was just as unreasonable as usual.
She and Allie stayed at the hot springs resort for three days. The next two days were calm with no further incidents.
Lindsey trusted the people she was close to without reservations and trusted Allie as well. When Allie saw that Lindsey was not suspicious anymore, she also put her mind to ease.
She was not required to go to the Wilford office for the time being as everything was taken care of by Allie and Liam.
Lindsey was more concerned about another thing.
During the three days at the resort, she tried not to think about the meaning behind Zayn avoiding her.
However, this question still came to mind from time to time.
Ever since the cruise incident, their relationship became like this. Not only did Zayn stop actively pestering her, he even became a bit evasive.
Lindsey sometimes felt that this was good as she would not have to say goodbye herself when the time came.
However, she could still feel the deep feelings that Zayn was suppressing.
These feelings were so strong that her heart would tingle from time to time, but all they signified was that she and Zayn were not meant to be.
That was simply the most appropriate way to describe her and Zayn.
Nonetheless, she should not be soft-hearted.
It was best to be like this.
Lindsey had it all thought out and liked the idea of gradually parting from each other. However, just shortly after returning home from the resort, she received a call from Mrs. Wendy.
"Lindsey..." Mrs. Wendy’s voice was anxious and heaving over the phone.
"Aunt Wendy, I'm here." Lindsey had a feeling that this was something big. For a moment, several scenarios popped into her mind that scared her half to death. She asked with a trembling voice, "What happened? Is something wrong?"
"The Old Master had an accident and is now being rushed to the hospital. Lindsey, come quickly...this may be..."
Mrs. Wendy did not finish her sentence, but everyone knew what it meant.
Lindsey almost cried and she did not bother to change before leaving out the door. At that moment, the door opposite hers opened as well.
When she saw Zayn, the tears that welled up in her eyes suddenly rolled out. It did not hit the ground, but it hit the heart of the person opposite her.
"Zayn...Grandpa...Grandpa’s..."
"I know," Zayn said as he walked to Lindsey. He pulled her into his arms and patted her back. "Don't cry. Grandpa will be fine."
After saying that, he lowered his head to help Lindsey wipe the tears off her face. He then let her go. As if that hug earlier had given him the courage, he took Lindsey's hand and said, "Let's go."
Lindsey let him pull her along. The warmth from his hand gave her a sense of security and comfort. Lindsey's heart, which initially wanted to escape, was unable to resist getting closer to him. She did not shrug off his hand. Instead, she held it tighter.
On the way to the hospital, Lindsey watched the quiet man and suppressed her tears.
In the face of death, everything seemed so insignificant. No matter one’s wealth or power, there was no way to fight it.
The two people were silent the whole way. The man’s side profile was tense and there was nothing unusual about him. His fingers that were grasping the steering wheel turned white.
Zayn had spent a large sum of money to hire the best team of doctors domestically and internationally to treat his grandfather’s illness. It was a pity that the old man’s condition never improved.
When the two of them arrived, the old man had just been pushed into the operating room surrounded by several doctors and nurses.
Mrs. Wendy stood to the side with red eyes and when she saw Zayn and Lindsey, she rushed over to them.
"Zayn, Lindsey, you're here..."
Lindsey came forward to hold her. Both of them had red eyes like rabbits, but they seemed to have found courage through their mutual support.
"Zayn, come here. I want to speak to you."
Zayn raised his eyes, which showed no emotions, but his hands that were holding the car keys were trembling. He walked over with heavy steps.
Mrs. Wendy looked at the kid that was way taller than her and felt like twenty years just flew by. In the blink of an eye, that little boy had grown into an upright man.
Her tears finally fell, blurring the figure in front of her. "Zayn, it's all my fault. The Old Master said that he wanted to go out at night to take a look around. I should’ve stopped him. Who knew..."
Mrs. Wendy choked up and could not continue. She had been a maid in the Guggenheim mansion for decades and had deep feelings for the Guggenheims. She was brought over by the Old Madam, but after the Old Madam left, the Old Master did not treat them badly and even took care of them.
Lindsey did not know how to console Mrs. Wendy, but Zayn held her hand and said reassuringly, "Aunt Wendy, I know you did your best. It's not your fault."
After a long time, Mrs. Wendy finally said a complete sentence, “Whenever I see the Old Master, I’ll think of the Old Madam. Before she died, she asked me to take good care of you and the Old Master. I...I really let her down..."
"Aunt Wendy..." Lindsey heard her words and could no longer hold back her tears.
Zayn’s eyes were also a little moist.
