Chapter 988 Stay for a Few More Days
He smiled lightly. "Outside the Maple Leaf Hotel. But you wouldn't have remembered someone like me now."
Maple Leaf Hotel? I thought I had no recollection of this, but then I remembered a time when I came to Tully City to look for Inch and Rebecca. I encountered a homeless man outside a hotel. His eyes had seemed familiar, but it was only a fleeting glance.
"Was that you?" I realized, looking at him with confusion. "You saw me, so why didn't you..."
"Why didn't I acknowledge you?" he interjected, his voice still soft.
I nodded.
He gave a bitter smile. "Yvette, have you forgotten why you stayed by my side in the beginning? Why you were willing to marry me and willing to get pregnant?"
His words rendered me utterly silent.
Indeed, I approached him for revenge. I stayed by his side, and I was willing to follow him and love him, but it was all an act.
Even so, when did my feelings for him start to change?
After a prolonged silence, Astoria finally could not stand it any longer and came out, suggesting, "Ms. Scott, Mr. Lucas, it's too cold outside. Why don't you come in and talk?"
I got up, checked the time, and saw it was already late. "I'll head back now. I'll come over tomorrow."
Astoria seemed to want me to stay over, but perhaps considering the inconvenience, she did not insist. She merely cautioned me to be careful on the way back.
Lucas remained silent, just quietly watching me leave.
I felt he had changed a lot, no longer resembling the Lucas I once knew.
Perhaps, people could change a lot after nearly experiencing death once.
After leaving the yard, I headed straight back to the hotel. Having not rested well for several days, I went to bed early upon returning to the hotel.
The next day, after contacting Astoria, I inquired about Lucas's condition. I learned that Lucas had had another episode, but fortunately, Dr. Wacket arrived in time, preventing any irreversible incidents.
However, quitting such substances was invariably painful, and Lucas's condition was not great after he stabilized.
I understood his current situation and knew there was only one way for him to get better. He had to endure the pain and get through it. Only by surviving it could he finally quit.
For several days, I had been running back and forth, which suddenly gave me the idea to find a larger courtyard. With this thought, I went ahead and did just that.
Lucas was likely to stay in Tully City for a while, and just his detoxification alone would take some time. I would inevitably come to Tully City often in the future, so with this in mind, I asked someone in Tully City to help me find a larger courtyard.
Just after I got off a call with a real estate agent, there was a knock on the door of my hotel room.
It was Minerva.
Seeing me open the door, she lifted the breakfast she had brought, saying, "I knew you wouldn't get up for breakfast downstairs, so I brought some to you."
I thanked her and asked, "What's our plan for today?"
She replied, "Our work here is done. Uncle Marcus asked when we're heading back."
After sipping some milk, I looked at her and asked, "So, we've finished all our business in Tully City?"
She nodded. "One was to inspect Newburn Village, and the other was to sign a contract with Ms. Sanchez. We've completed both tasks."
Indeed, we had come to Tully City for work, and now that it was finished, it made sense to go back. However, I clearly could not leave yet, but keeping Minerva here was not an option either.
After some thought, I told Minerva, "Tell Uncle Marcus that you’re going back to Lake City for your work now, but I need to stay in Tully City for a few more days."
She asked in confusion, "Do you have unfinished business in Tully City?"
I shook my head. "No, it's just that Sally invited me to spend a few days in Tully City. You heard her last night. She came with her two children, so she wants to stay here a bit longer. Our future cooperation with Sanchez Corp will only grow from here, so it's a good opportunity to get closer to her."
She nodded in agreement. "Okay, then I'll book a flight back this afternoon. You need to be careful in Tully City. I've heard that with the ongoing border conflict, many refugees are sneaking into the city. It could be dangerous with all sorts of people around."
I smiled and reassured her, "Don't worry, I know. I'll just stay a few days and then head back too."
