Chapter 697
Julian had an awkward expression on his face. Matthew was still next to him when Vernon was yelling into his phone about how he wanted to kill Matthew's entire family.
Julian was afraid that Matthew would be provoked and kill him off on a whim, so he secretly peeked at Matthew's face. To his surprise, Matthew looked completely calm.
A while later, Julian asked Vernon, "What should we do now, Mr. Fuller? Who will you send over next?"
Then, Vernon responded while gritting his teeth, "I'll do it myself."
Right after he said that, Vernon hung up the call.
Julian then looked at Matthew and asked carefully, "Was it good enough?"
Matthew replied coldly, "Update me on the situation when he comes over."
Though Matthew appeared to be calm, he harbored a strong killing intent deep within. However, he didn't bother himself with yelling and threatening Vernon over the phone because it would be better to just lie in wait for Vernon when he arrived.
Julian nodded in response and said, "Alright. I'll give you a call then."
Matthew nodded back and turned to leave. At once, Julian melted onto the bed weakly. He had been sweating all over anxiously, but it was finally over for now.
The door creaked as Matthew pulled it open. Coincidentally, he was met with a crying Kingston, and Matthew exclaimed in shock, "Didn't I tell you to stay put? It's dangerous here."
Kingston then turned on his side and hurriedly wiped his tears away. "The wind was too strong, and it blew some sand into my eyes."
Then, Matthew frowned and said, "I didn't ask why you're crying. I said that it's dangerous here, so why did you come?"
Upon hearing that, Kingston felt even more embarrassed. "I was scared that you'd die and that there'd be no one to clean up your corpse."
Though he might have said that, Kingston felt a bout of warmth in his heart because ever since his father passed away, no one had ever cared for him.
Matthew hummed in acknowledgment and walked off after he took a glance at the sniper rifle Kingston was holding onto.
Kingston soon followed suit, the both of them walking in silence up until they reached the car. Just as Matthew opened the car door, Kingston blurted out, "Thank you."
Matthew then looked back at Kingston in surprise as he held onto the door. "You're thanking me?"
Didn't Kingston claim himself to be an ingrate? Why did he thank Matthew out of nowhere?
There was an odd expression on Kingston's face as he said, "Thank you for killing the Fuller family for my sake. I'm very grateful for it."
Nowadays, barely anyone would help an elderly if they fell down on the road, but Matthew had actually killed someone for him.
Kingston knew very well what the stakes were, but he was also afraid that he'd fall into a trap like he did the last time.
If Matthew hadn't said those words, Kingston might not have expressed his thanks even if he felt grateful inwardly.
Seizing the opportunity, Matthew walked up to Kingston and said, "Since that's the case, you can finally hand me the Plague Compendium, right?"
Immediately after, Kingston's pupils shrank, and he directed his line of sight elsewhere. "I'm just saying that, so don't take it too seriously."
Having said that, Kingston pulled open the door and sat in the passenger's seat.
Upon seeing that, Matthew smacked his lips. Didn't Kingston just say that he was grateful? Why did he do a 180 as soon as Matthew brought up the Plague Compendium?
Getting into the driver's seat, Matthew looked at Kingston and said, "Just what should I do to make you believe me?"
However, Kingston remained stubborn and said, "I don't owe you anything, alright? You willingly killed him off for me and offended the Fuller family yourself. It has nothing to do with me since I didn't force you or promise you anything!"
Matthew knitted his brows at Kingston's response, somehow thinking that he sounded like a lapdog in Kingston's eyes. He felt a little aggrieved—he had put in a lot of effort, after all.
Then, Matthew spat out coldly, "I would've pulled your hair and held you to the ground before hitting you if you were a woman."
At that, Kingston frowned and said, "You… You hit women? What has the world become? How can you hit women?
"It's already difficult enough to find a wife in this day and age, and there are at least 30 people like me in Woolfields who aren't able to find a wife. But with your attitude alone, you can forget about wanting to find a wife!"
