Chapter 684
"I'm not hurt, so it doesn't hurt at all." Lorrain insisted.
Matthew's heart ached at the sight. Her soft, delicate skin shouldn't have to endure something like three bloody scratches. Even a tiny prick from a needle would've made her cry out in pain.
But here Lorrain was, suffering quietly, trying to be brave for Matthew.
Matthew gently stroked the skin around Lorraine's wound, feeling a surge of emotion swell up inside him.
His throat tightened as if something was stuck in it, and though he wanted to say something, but no words came.
Overcome with emotion, Matthew scooped Lorrain into his arms and kissed her on the forehead.
Sophia watched the scene with a twisted smile. "Lorraine, saying that now won't do you any good. It's too late. It's no longer just about whether to let Tobby apologize.
"Even if your whole family knelt before me, begging for mercy, it wouldn't matter. I'm going to make sure Matthew ends up in prison. Get ready to see him behind bars."
Lorraine was terrified by Sophia's words. She burst into louder sobs and cried. "Please, please! I told Tobby not to apologize anymore. Don't send my dad to jail. I'm begging you, Mrs. Staphenson!"
Sophia's eyes gleamed with malice. "It was too late. Matthew is going to jail soon!"
Matthew's gaze turned as sharp as a blade, his fists clenching tightly. The thought of killing crossed his mind. But with Lillian and Lorraine beside him, he held back.
Matthew wanted to be a good son, someone Lillian wouldn't have to worry about, and a stronger father that Lorraine could depend on.
Gradually, he relaxed his fists and held Lorraine closer, softly reassuring her. "Lorraine, I will not be going to jail. I'm going to make a call, and I'll let the mayor deal with him."
Just then, Joshua had finished his phone call and overheard Matthew. His face twisted in scorn. "You think that you can call the mayor? Do you even know who the mayor is?
"You're nothing! Even big-shot business owners have to schedule appointments to see Mr. Moore. For you? You wouldn't even get on the waiting list. Please stop dreaming!"
Matthew didn't respond. Instead, he quietly dialed a video call on his phone.
The waiting tone echoed from his phone as he stared at the screen and waited patiently.
Sophia's face paled at the sight. She turned to Joshua and asked, "Do you think he knows Mr. Moore?"
Joshua shook his head dismissively. As the mayor's office director, he was the one who managed the mayor's schedule and meetings. He believed he had a clear grasp of Matthew's bluff.
"Please don't pretend anymore. If you really had Mr. Moore's number, pigs would fly. You're just trying to scare me, but it's not going to work!"
Matthew glanced at Joshua briefly, then continued waiting for Cedric to answer the call.
Inside an office, Cedric was signing off on documents when his phone buzzed. He glanced at the caller ID. It was Matthew.
Cedric's heart skipped a beat. Matthew wasn't just anybody. He was the owner of the Juprus Ring, a figure even Brad was deeply respected. Cedric couldn't believe Matthew was calling him.
Cedric rubbed his face, forcing a smile before answering the call. "Mr. Grant, what an honor to receive your call! I wasn't expecting this."
Matthew's voice was cold. "Do you have someone named Joshua Stephenson working for you?"
Cedric smiled and replied, "Yes. He's my office director. Is there something I can help you with?"
Joshua overheard the voice on the call, which sounded eerily similar to Cedric's. His stomach flipped, but he quickly composed himself.
Cedric was known for his strict, authoritative manner, and he rarely showed emotion. Yet, this person on the call was speaking in a low, almost groveling tone, with none of the usual superiority Cedric was known for. It couldn't be him.
Joshua sneered. "Bitch, you hired some spineless lackey to impersonate Mr. Moore. Do you think this is funny?
"Go ahead and keep pretending. The moment Mr. Murray arrives with the police, you and the liar on the phone will find it impossible to escape and will go straight to jail!"
