"Sure," Cressida replied decisively.
Everything Luther had prepared—his long speech, his justifications—was all jammed up in his throat. For a moment, he thought he had misheard.
"What did you say?"
"I said sure," Cressida repeated evenly. "I'll do it."
On the other end of the line, a long silence ensued.
Her bluntness unsettled him. He had braced himself for a battle, only for her to surrender without a fight. It felt like punching a pillow.
"What do you want for compensation?" Luther asked, forcing himself to stay calm.
"50 million dollars," Cressida replied. "By check."
Luther nearly crushed the phone in his hand. "50 million? Cressida, you're asking for the moon!"
"Is that too much?" she countered lightly. "For three years of being the Strudwick family's maid, for my child's life, and your future with Natasha. 50 million dollars is a pretty good deal."

"Or you could refuse to pay." Cressida cut him off. "And I'll keep competing. Tell me, with me still in the compe
