Maverick was the only person left under the wisteria trellises. He sat stiffly on the wheelchair. His hair and clothes were wet because of the rain. Yet, he seemed as though he couldn't sense the chilliness. It looked as though his soul and all his strength had left his body. He had a glazed look in his eyes as he stared absent-mindedly in the direction Nicole had gone off to. Maverick tried to say something, yet his voice cracked. He wanted to bawl his eyes out and shout hysterically. He wanted to ask the heavens why he had to suffer such pain and agony. Yet, the awful pain and despair had somehow overpowered his other emotions. Maverick didn't even shed a tear. The only feeling clear to him was the cold emptiness that grew and expanded in his heart.
