Chapter 790 Dare Not Step On Her Toes
Neither did Vickie ever think of herself as a devout person nor did she have the best of tempers. She could suck it up if it were once or twice.
Back at the golf course, Yuliana would not get off her back and had splashed her face with water. Of course, she had returned the deed with a slap to settle the score.
Actually, Yuliana did not get the upper hand.
Nevertheless, Vickie was losing patience towards this difficult character who was sticking to her like a piece of gum. She detested this sort of constant petty strife among women.
Although she was more than capable of taking care of it, Vickie was sick and tired of dealing with it.
Therefore, it was best to get Yuliana for good. She simply needed to just give Yuliana one good scare, and the latter would not dare step on her toes again.
The thought of the incoming peace and quiet left Vickie in a better mood.
Just then, a familiar figure suddenly appeared outside the window.
“Vick, what are you staring blankly at?”
Vickie was dumbstruck for a moment before snapping out of her thoughts.
Once she focused on her line of vision, she noticed Massimo standing outside the window with his hands behind his back. He gazed at her with a smile on his face.
Raising a brow, she asked, “Why are you here?”
“I was bored with nothing to do at home, so I took a stroll.” He then glanced to his left and his right before turning back to suggest, “Do you want to go out for a walk?”
Vickie gave it a quick thought and agreed.
Massimo was not a stranger to her. During the time she was still together with Gregory more than four years ago, she had hung out with his bros and was quite close to them.
As the young master of the Nolan Empire, Massimo was greatly adored by his family. He was a well-known tyrant around this area.
His family were not against his relationship with Gregory. In fact, they encouraged it. Thus, he often came over to have fun with Gregory. Both of them were best pals.
Vickie had no ill feelings towards Massimo. She stepped out of the room and walked on the peddled pathway along the garden with him.
Massimo asked, “Have you clear the air with Gregory?”
Vickie was taken aback as it never crossed her mind that he would ask about this. She smiled faintly. “There’s nothing more to be said between us.”
Massimo pulled a long face. A while later, he sighed and said, “You know how Gregory is. He’s that kind of person. He might speak with a forked tongue but won’t admit his feelings even though he loves you so. He’s too embarrassed to bring it up because he did you wrong then, but we’ve been watching him wear his heart on his sleeve for the past four years. Now that you’re out, he was willing to take you in because he’s still into you. Let bygones be bygones. We should all move on.”
Vickie looked straight ahead. The golden rays traversed across the trees and leaves along the winding path and cast dappled shadows on the ground.
She answered quietly, “You say that he has been feeling guilty for the past four years. Then, why won’t he bail me out of prison?”
Massimo was stunned. The words escaped his lips. “You had...”
“I thought you all knew that I didn’t kill that woman.”
Tilting her head, her gaze fell on him. Her clear eyes were like a profound lake, mirroring a tiny human reflection rather distinctly.
Massimo was at a loss for words.
Vickie grinned. “I don’t hate him for putting me in jail. I have nothing to say if I really did it and the law apprehended me for justice.
“What I despise is that he framed me so that I’d end up in prison. He stopped at nothing to put me on the wrong side of justice. Massimo, don’t tell me that you’re unaware of who killed that woman. He’s capable of even laying hands on his woman. What other things isn’t he capable of?”
Massimo never thought that she would say such a thing.
Realizing that he might have done a disservice today instead, he was quick to justify. “Vick, hear me out. Things are not what you imagine them to be. She isn’t his woman. There’s nothing going on between them...”
“Nothing going on?” Vickie raised a brow and gave him a smile. “Massimo, I saw them lying on the same bed with my very own eyes. Do you think you’d have seen the situation clearer than I did?”
Massimo froze.
Beads of sweat broke out on his back like tiny needles pricking his pores as a chill crept down his spine.
While he fell silent, Vickie also held her tongue.
The pair quietly advanced forth. It was unknown how far along they had walked when Vickie suddenly spoke up, “He told you to come today, didn’t he?”
Massimo paused before finally and truthfully giving a nod.
Vickie was slightly taken aback. It was only a random guess, but who would have thought that he would admit to it?
She found it sarcastic yet amusing, while at the same time, her thoughts were accompanied by unspeakable minute emotions tangled up in a bunch like a chaotic mess.
She replied softly, “It seems that he really wants me to stay.”
That was the truth.
Massimo did not deny it, so she pursued another question. “Why didn’t he say it to me himself?”
With a bitter grin, Massimo shrugged. “Who knows? Perhaps it’s because he said that you’d refuse to listen. He knows that there will always be a wall between you two if he’s the one talking. You refuse to listen. You probably harbor preconceived suspicion before he can say anything, hence the reason why he handed the task over to me.”
With that, Massimo let out a sigh. He was baffled by the relationship between these two.
“Weren’t you guys great together? You two had a good thing going, being childhood friends and all. How did it come to this?”
His words touched Vickie’s innermost feelings. She had the same thought in mind. Yes, how did it come to this?
They once had each other’s back through thick and thin, knew and trusted each other, and wanted each other’s company the most. Why did it all change so drastically in the end?
Vickie did not have the answer. In fact, nobody did.
An invisible silence overshadowed the duo. They took a stroll until the end of the pathway when Vickie turned over to look at Massimo and uttered, “Tell him to leave the past in the past and take the future one step at a time. Don’t come talk to me about this again.”
Massimo frowned. He obviously disapproved of Vickie’s resolute and cold response. He hesitated for a moment before inquiring, “Is there really no turning back?”
Vickie sarcastically curled her lips. “No.”
With that, she made a sharp turn and took long strides to her room.
Massimo no longer tagged along with her. He quietly stood there, watching as her receding figure disappeared around a corner. Letting out a helpless sigh, he shook his head and turned to walk towards the opposite direction.
