“I didn’t look down on you…”
Gabrielle snorted, “You shouldn’t have looked down on me.”
She raised her hands, “To earn money for your tuition, I worked as a dishwasher in the dead of winter. My hands were submerged in water for nearly 20 hours a day. Even now, I still get painful and itchy chilblains in winter. ”
“My knees are worn out from moving things, and they hurt badly whenever it rains.”
There’s also the injury on her waist and the calluses on her palms.
She’s done every dirty and tedious job to support his education.
Sometimes, when she looks at her dusty, disheveled reflection in the mirror, she wonders if she’s unworthy of standing by his side.
Gabrielle could think this way on her own, but she couldn't accept Frederick's disdain for her like this.
“At the age of my teens or twenties, don't I like beautiful clothes? But for the sake of making money, I wore one piece of clothing for seven or eight years. Even in winter, I didn't dare to buy a decent down jacket.”
