Late at night, the streetlights of Clearford flickered on one by one, casting a glow across the city. The red-light district in the center buzzed with life—it got rowdier as the night deepened.
A pickup truck pulled up at an alley between two nightclubs. Two tall, brawny men jumped down from the cab.
"Finally! If you two took any longer, I’d have to shut the place down," a raspy voice barked.
The nightclub owner was a broad-waisted woman with a fierce look. She grinned at them, flashing her gums in a smile that somehow made her even more intimidating.
Alan Parker felt a chill crawl up his spine but forced a polite reply. "Same as last time, boss lady. Hundred crates of beer, hundred crates of hard liquor. Wanna check?"
"No need," she waved him off, her hand grazing his arm in a way that made his skin crawl. "You two are always reliable."
