Chapter 148

At this moment, it seemed to Diana that Yolanda's top rank was likely a result of her frantic studying, driven by fear of being kicked out of the Henderson family. But soon after the entrance exam, her true colors showed again. If someone was inherently lazy and vain, no amount of parental guidance would make a difference. "Yolanda, if you ever lie or talk big again, don't expect any allowance from me!" Yolanda merely glanced at Diana with a hint of indifference before walking past her and heading calmly to her room. "Hey! What's with that attitude? I'm your mom! Can't I scold you? Stop right there!" Diana yelled at Yolanda's retreating figure. However, Yolanda didn't miss a step. As she passed by Yvonne's room, she noticed a shadow under the door. She didn't need to guess what was going on. Yvonne was likely eavesdropping and enjoying Diana's scolding from the other side of the door. Her guess was correct. Yvonne was indeed pressed against the door, listening intently to the commotion outside. Only when she heard the door close in the adjacent room did she return to her desk to resume studying. Even though Yvonne hadn't been able to help today, at least Yolanda hadn't gained any advantage either. From what she knew about Diana, she could bet that Diana was probably fuming right now and was likely running low on any goodwill she had for Yolanda's top score. "I won't give you a chance to surpass me, Yolanda, never!" … Due to her agreement with Brigham, Yolanda arrived at the entrance of Starry Gemworks after school the next day. Starry Gemworks had rented a four-story mansion as their office. It was located at a serene spot that perfectly matched the company's elegant vibe. When Yolanda walked in, she was surprised to find Eleanor and Bailee standing in the lobby. It was already noon. By now, even if Eleanor had sent Bailee to work, she should have left. Yolanda's eyes flickered with curiosity. Could Eleanor really be so quirky as to stay with Bailee at work? As Yolanda approached them, she overheard Eleanor talking on the phone. "I'm so sorry, Mr. Ware. We got stuck in traffic and arrived late." Yolanda couldn't help but feel speechless. Riverdale was just a small city, and she hadn't heard of any major accidents in the city center today. It was hard to believe traffic could be this bad. This was Bailee's dream job, and she managed to be late on her first day. For someone like her, finding a job would have been a miracle if she hadn't gotten in through connections. Bailee, standing next to Eleanor, yawned wearily. She was late because she had been so excited the night before that she couldn't sleep and ended up waking up late. If she had caught a cab immediately, she wouldn't have been so late, but Eleanor didn't want to spend the money on a cab. She thought being a few minutes late was no big deal for a newcomer, so they took the bus instead. They managed to get seats on the bus and fell asleep. By the time they woke up, the bus had already reached the outskirts of town, and Starry Gemworks was getting farther away. They had to scramble to get off and catch another bus back to the city. On the way back, they ran into another obstacle. Riverdale's marathon was taking place today, and the main roads were temporarily closed.
