The Last Dueling Competition
Hearing this answer, Geoffrey was stunned at first. Then he burst out with a hearty laugh. "Ha-ha, I like your character."
Had this been someone else, Geoffrey would usually use his finger to tap on their head as a reprimand: arrogant, boastful, and conceited.
But this was Valentina.
She had the right to be so.
When Geoffrey offered her a house, Valentina didn't turn down the offer.
She had to stay in Biddeford for at least four years, and having a house would make her work more convenient. Moreover, she deserved it.
However, upon hearing that she'd need to study in the medical faculty, she refused.
Geoffrey advised her to consider it at her own pace. Regardless of whether or not she studied in medical faculty, the house would be hers.
Additionally, on behalf of Biddeford University, Geoffrey offered a generous deal - a scholarship worth up to a million dollars.
He agreed with Valentina that they would meet again when the school started. While speaking, he deliberately turned on the speakerphone so all the admissions officers could hear it.
The officers were left speechless, while Geoffrey was pleased.
Valentina was tapping on her keyboard, tilting her head. Geoffrey was still talking, but she started to become a bit impatient.
So, she couldn't help but shoot the meddlesome William another cross look.
Geoffrey spoke for more than ten minutes, finally wrapping up his call.
Upon hanging up, he felt as though he had forgotten something.
After a while, he finally realized that he was so overjoyed that he missed the key point. Wasn't Valentina supposed to be traveling far? Why was she with William?
William put away his phone. "Congratulations. Now I'm your alumni."
Valentina let out a cold harrumph. "Thanks."
William paused. Was she harrumphing at him?
He was speechless, but he could only force out a wry smile, telling himself not to take it to heart.
Seeing Valentina constantly typing on her keyboard, he looked at her and pondered something for a moment.
Then he got up and took a close look.
Was she playing Candy Crush Saga?
William said, "Miss Ricardo, I have asked for more changes of clothes to be prepared for you as you're on your period. They will be delivered soon."
"It's so kind of you."
"It's nothing."
As soon as William entered the bedroom, Valentina switched the screen.
The game she had been playing was no longer on display. Instead, a grand building appeared on the screen, teeming with black-clad bodyguards sprinkled about its lavishly decorated hall.
It was none other than the headquarters of the God Armed Alliance.
Two hours ago, in that very room, Valentina had watched William conversing with his subordinates from start to finish.
...
A few days later, Valentina's test results were revealed publicly.
Ever since, streams of enrollment officers have been making their way to the Ricardo family. Cars crammed at their door every day, and it was as though the threshold was on the edge of being trampled.
Word spread quickly about this.
The news of the principal of Biddeford University making a personal visit for student enrollment caught the ears of local reporters. The unpretentious George was then "compelled" to appear on camera on several occasions.
Scoring high marks wasn't unusual. It happened every year.
What was unusual was that the principal and vice-principal of Biddeford University came personally.
Even more unusual, the principal was willing to give out an apartment worth tens of millions to win this student over.
Yet the most unusual thing was that the student for whom Biddeford University was pulling all these stunts and splurging so much, had left the composition portion completely blank.
Even students who generally bombed their tests and didn't know how to write would rack their brains to babble some nonsense for the sake of earning some extra marks, or just write a heading, which, by luck alone, might fetch them some points if the examiner appreciated the sentiment.
Yet, she didn't write a word.
The strangest part was, she managed to score a high mark without even writing the composition.
She ranked twelfth in the state for science.
She was the only one in the state who scored a perfect mark for mathematics and science.
Rory - the mayor of Mapleville, the principal of Lakeside Elite, and a host of other school leaders successively paid visits to congratulate, bringing along bonuses.
Everyone in Mapleville soon knew about a girl named Valentina from Lakeside Elite.
This attention overshadowed even that of the the top student.
And those netizens who had previously criticized Valentina's interview video at the school gate all changed their attitude.
Eric squatted at the door of the Ricardo family, looking back at a courtyard full of people behind him - his father, the leaders of Lakeside Elite, reporters, and miscellaneous relatives of the Ricardo family.
He was confused and asked Augus who was also getting fresh air outside.
"Can you tell me how your sister did this as she barely passed her exams throughout high school? She didn't even write the composition."
Augus didn't want to talk to him at first, but he thought for a moment and said, "Val isn't really brainless."
Eric was startled. "What do you mean?"
So Valentina wasn't really brainless, but he was?
...
There were only two days left for the Dueling Competition.
"Miss Ricardo, are you going to the arena today?"
Over the past few days, Valentina had been feeling unwell, so William didn't mention taking her to the Dueling Competition. Judging by the time and observing Valentina's condition, he guessed that her period should be over today.
Without lifting her head, Valentina said, "Let's go there tomorrow."
William nodded without saying anything more.
The next day.
After dinner, William left the hotel with his group.
They appeared at the arena ten minutes before the start of the Dueling Competition.
On the final day, there were more people than any previous day.
As soon as William's group showed up, they immediately caught the attention of most people.
Especially Valentina in the group.
On the first day, quite a few people saw this girl walking along with the Blackwater Mercenary Group.
There were even some people at the venue who had almost been beaten up by Valentina during a scramble for the goods of the Blackwater.
"How come she's walking with a few merchant-looking fellows today?"
"It must be that those guys from Blackwater are too useless. She has turned to others."
"Heard her skills are pretty impressive. If she's willing, the entire Blazing Flame Mercenary Group would welcome her."
"You just want her to be your wife, right?"
"Really, any Tom, Dick, or Harry wants to be the second Unknown. Does she even deserve it?"
Feeling the piercing gazes upon them, Leonard stepped forward and advised Valentina, "Miss Ricardo, the people here are no good. Please make sure to stay close to us."
"Also, the Dueling Competition here is quite different from other games. Please be mentally prepared."
Leonard wondered, 'Have all young ladies become so audacious nowadays? For a beautiful young lady to enjoy such things...'
'What is the boss thinking? Miss Ricardo is oblivious to what's inside, but he knows it well, doesn't he?'
'He actually brought a girl to witness such violence and gore...'
Wouldn't this give her nightmares and leave a psychological scar?
And those predatory gazes on Valentina...
Leonard was truly worried about what chaos could spawn because of Valentina.
The group arrived on the second floor.
Bruno and the rest of the team also reached the second floor, standing about tens of meters away from Valentina's group.
"Didn't she say she wasn't close to that group of people? Has she been with them these days?" Luke looked at Valentina, who was standing with William, and felt bizarrely annoyed.
"Didn't she say our boss entrusted us to her? Now she's turned a blind eye to us. What's the meaning of this?"
Badman said jokingly, "You're not a child. It's enough for her to care about your life. Does she also need to care about your meals and sleep, or when you go to the restroom?"
Regardless of Valentina's background and whether she truly knows their boss, Badman respected Valentina's abilities from the bottom of his heart.
Leonard spotted Bruno and the others. In a low voice, he said to William, "A few days ago, Bruno of the Blackwater fought with the Hurricane. Bruno had a narrow victory."
William followed his gaze and looked over.
Leonard continued, "I've been watching over the arena for the past few days. Strangely, I haven't seen the woman who just joined the Blackwater."
Leonard was particularly curious about this woman who seemed intent on matching Unknown.
He was curious to know why she got the courage to compare herself with Unknown.
If not for Unknown bombing the headquarters of the God Armed Alliance, Leonard would have worshipped Unknown and S, the number one hacker on the list, as his idols.
On hearing this, William lowered his eyes and looked at Valentina beside him.
He noticed Valentina seemed to have missed Bruno and the others.
However, just as William moved his gaze away, Valentina turned her eyes towards Bruno.
"She saw us. Should we go over?" Luke was curious about the group of people in peculiar attire beside Valentina.
