Principle Came to the Door

'Could it be menstrual cramps?' Valentina complained in her heart. "Just kidding," Valentina turned over, adopting a supine sleeping position. Kidding? William's thin lips parted slightly as if to say something. However, seeing Valentina resting with her eyes closed, he decided to let it be. Then, Valentina succumbed to sleep. In her state of half-consciousness, she suddenly felt lighter. She rapidly opened her eyes, finding William's face right before her. Noticing she was being carried by William, a fleeting murderous intent flashed across her eyes. At this moment, if she had a knife in her hand, William's neck would probably have been removed. "What are you doing?" Valentina asked coldly. "Sleep on bed," William suggested softly. Their gazes met. After a while, Valentina closed her eyes without saying anything further. William moved her to the bed, covering her with a blanket. Outside, the sky had already darkened, and so, William turned off the bedroom light. After finishing these, he didn't walk away; instead, he stood beside the bed and saw Valentina turning her body on the bed, continuing to sleep facing the inside. In the darkness, his features were blurred, making it impossible to discern his expression. Valentina concealed her feelings quickly just now, but sharp William still caught the fleeting murderous intent in her eyes. In that instant, her aura completely changed. If Isaias was around and felt this familiar aura, his reaction would definitely be intense. Facing Valentina's icy eyes, William was also taken aback. It was truly baffling for such a look to appear on a girl of eighteen or nineteen years old, enough to give him a strange feeling. Perhaps not even those hardened criminals in Chadron who were accustomed to violence and murder could match her poise. The next day. After finishing lunch, Valentina returned to the room. She glanced at the cell phone on the couch, which she hadn't checked all morning. She picked it up and saw it was out of charge. She plugged it into the charger, turned it on, and saw up to a hundred missed calls, from all over the country. Some were from the admissions office. The call from Augus was amongst them. Valentina was just about to call Augus, but he called first. "Val, a lot of people have come to our house." "How many points did you score?" Even through the screen, Valentina could sense that Augus was trying his best to restrain his excitement. "I just remembered this and hadn't checked yet." Augus was speechless. Perhaps only she would forget such an important day. "Let me see." Valentina sat on the sofa, reaching out for the laptop provided by the hotel. Under Augus's urging, Valentina entered the admission ticket number. "How much did you score?" Augus asked nervously. He doubted whether he would be this nervous and excited on the day his own examination results were announced. Valentina didn't do the composition, so he had no expectations for her to be admitted to Biddeford University. But so many admissions officers had come to their house this morning, and they were all from key universities. He was really curious about Valentina's score. Valentina responded, "I couldn't find it." "Why? Is the internet down?" Augus asked. Staring at her computer screen, Valentina calmly answered, "The scores of the top fifty in the state are not yet available. We'll only know in a few days." "Top fifty?" Augus exclaimed in disbelief. He turned to look at the admissions office, which was crowded around George, all chattering and showcasing their abilities in the backyard. "No wonder they didn't tell your score." Seven or eight cars were parked at the gate, and the neighbors came out of their houses one after another to spectate, saying that the Ricardo family had produced the top scholar. The gossipy old men and women gathered directly at the gate, asking Augus if these schools were here to recruit him and how many points he scored. Some said they were here for Diana. Anyway, no one mentioned Valentina. In their impression, Valentina was always slumped over with long hair obscuring her eyes, barely alive and certainly not studious. "It's my eldest sister," Augus told them, before sidestepping them, moving a bit further away, and continuing his call with Valentina. "The test was very difficult this year. A lot of people didn't do well. Val, since you made the top fifty in the state even without writing the composition, is there a chance you could still get into Biddeford University even if you didn't make the cut-off score?" Valentina stated, "I've almost found it." "What?" Augus vaguely heard the sound of a keyboard clacking. An idea struck him. "Val, you're not trying to…" Sure enough, Valentina said, "I've hacked into the official website of the Mapleville Examination Board." Augus was dumbfounded. Wasn't this a bit inappropriate? Before Augus could even speak, he heard another car approaching. He turned around to see which university it came from. Upon seeing the big letters on the car, Augus's eyes widened. He said to Valentina in a trance, "Val, no need to check anymore. Biddeford University's cars have arrived. Two of them." Following behind them was an extravagant Bentley. It didn't appear to be a car that the admissions office could afford, yet there were indeed two characters 'Biddeford University' stuck onto it. The letters weren't big. It was slightly cartoonish and was quite cute. At the same time, Valentina said, "I've sent the screenshot to you." From the backseat of the Bentley, a kind and friendly old man alighted, assisted by the driver from the same vehicle. Augus heard someone from the Biddeford University Admissions Office calling the old man, "Mr. Principal." The principal of Biddeford University? Augus looked at the group from Biddeford University, almost unconsciously, he unlocked his WhatsApp. When Augus saw the grades Valentina sent him, he stayed silent for a moment before gasping sharply. She scored full marks in several subjects, and the only points she lost in Literature were for not completing the essay! And she ranked 12th in the state. Augus held his phone, lost in thought for a long time. How on earth did she achieve this? "It really is a case of a scholar being born from a humble family." Geoffrey stood at the door of the Ricardo family and uttered this after seeing their living conditions. He could not wait to see Valentina. "Let's go. We can't fall too far behind them," Geoffrey said, leading a group of people into the courtyard. Seeing more people arriving, the admissions team thought to themselves, wondering who the next stubborn competitor was going to be. They looked closely. "They're from Biddeford University." "The principal of Biddeford University has actually come in person." The bustling courtyard gradually quieted down. The principal of Biddeford University was recruiting students personally! This must be an exception, right? Diana stood silently at her door, watching the admissions officers address Valentina and offering all sorts of enticing conditions. Jealousy had already clouded her mind. Suddenly, someone shouted, "The Principal of Biddeford University." Diana snapped back to reality. She saw Geoffrey appear with the help of a young assistant. Diana's mind went blank, and then she glanced at Augus at the door. She immediately reacted, pulling her mother who was about to go up and greet Geoffrey into her room, and locking the door. "Why did you pull me in? Didn't you see the principal of Biddeford University is here? Hurry up and go out to say hello. The neighbors will envy us." "Oh my, I really did not expect that I would have this fortune after struggling for half my life. Both of my daughters have actually been admitted to Biddeford University." All morning, Selena smiled so happily that her face was sore. "I must host a grand party for your father's snobbish relatives who always looked down upon me." "These universities all offer quite nice conditions. I wonder what terms Biddeford University will produce. The benefits they offer must not be few. Wouldn't they offer two houses for us?" Selena was talking to herself and was about to open the door to have a good talk with Mr. Jefferson. Nevertheless, she was firmly held back by Diana. "Mom, don't go out." "What's the matter with you? Didn't you hear that Mr. Jefferson is here? Why do you look so terrified? Are you not feeling well?" Selena touched Diana's forehead which was ice-cold. She then patted Diana's hand lightly. "Even if you are feeling unwell, bear with it for a while. I will take you to the hospital later. I have to receive Mr. Jefferson for now. Be good." "Mom!" Diana became anxious, spreading her arms to block the door. Selena was not highly educated, but she was not slow-witted. Recalling the previous events, she realized something was wrong and quickly stopped smiling. She asked, "What is happening with your recommendation situation?" Augus looked at the suddenly closed door of Diana and remembered that Diana never mentioned how many points she had scored on the test.
