Lydia Sent Tim Away
Enzo looked solemn, his piercing and cold stared directly at Lydia, making others feel suffocated. It was as if the moment Lydia dared to lie to him, she would face his dreadful punishment.
Such gaze, Lydia had seen it since she was a child.
Whenever her father laid such a gaze on her, she would tremble with fear, her body shivering. In severe cases, she would even pray internally, begging her father not to kill her...
Facing her father's gaze, Lydia informed him, "It was Uncle Lucas's men who killed him. I saw it with my own eyes."
Enzo nodded without expressing any more doubts.
Suddenly he said, "Lydia, you are a grown-up lady now, it's time to discuss your marriage. I will find a good candidate for you."
"I'm still young, I don't want to get married.”
Enzo ignored her words and thought of a suitable candidate: a local rich businessman, whom he immediately recommended to Lydia.
Lydia responded, "But that man already has a wife and several mistresses. He's twenty years older than me."
"What does that matter? I also have many women, all of whom are much younger than me."
Lydia felt physiological disgust and nausea well up within her.
She managed to say, "But someone told me that a proper marriage is between one man and one woman; it is about loyalty and love, not like what you portrayed."
Enzo sneered, "One man and one woman? That's an excuse the weak use for their inability. Have you ever seen any powerful man with only one woman? And what is loyalty and love?" Enzo seemed to hear something ridiculous.
Following up, he asked, "Lydia, you are not fond of Tim, are you?"
"How could I possibly like him!"
"That's good. Although he's from a decent family and is good-looking, he has caused us a lot of trouble. I don't want you to be involved with him."
"I know."
"Good child, take some rest."
All that occupied Lydia's mind was her father's reaction when he talked about her mother, especially the words "prostitute" and "died from childbirth".
She couldn't rest at all as she couldn't sit in peace for a moment.
She got up and left the room, heading for her father's residence. However, she saw her father and Japheth leaving the room, one after another.
Hadn't her father ordered Japheth and Lucas to be locked up together? Why hadn't Japheth been locked up? They didn't even look like enemies at all.
Lydia stepped forward, "Father."
The two turned to look at the suddenly appeared Lydia.
Japheth hesitated, then addressed her, "Miss Lydia."
Lydia looked at the two men who were in a harmonious atmosphere, and asked, "Did you forgive Japheth?"
Enzo said, "After all, Japheth has been working for me for so many years, for the Callahan Clan..."
For the first time, Lydia interrupted him, "All of this is your plot, isn't it? Uncle Lucas is the one who's been schemed against."
Enzo turned to her.
"Japheth pretended to be bought over by Uncle Lucas, had me injured, calculated everything, and waited for me to come back and accuse Uncle Lucas."
Lucas originally thought he could use the death of Lydia to frame Tim, thus stirring up the hatred between Enzo and the Babbitt family. However, he was unaware that he had fallen into Enzo's deeper trap.
Lydia gradually unveiled their scheme bit by bit.
"In your pursuit to incriminate Uncle Lucas and to deal with him justly, you didn't hesitate to put me into the calculation as well.
"Were you not afraid that Japheth might accidentally kill me?"
Lydia pressed on, "The one who ordered Japheth to shoot – was it Uncle Lucas, or was it you?"
Japheth said, "Miss Lydia, I just pretended to align with Lucas. The one who ordered me to kill you was indeed Lucas.
"If your father hadn't been prepared, you would have been killed by Lucas and used to frame the Babbitt family."
Lydia said, "If Uncle Lucas didn't plan to harm me, Father would also risk my life to plot against Uncle Lucas, right?"
Lydia was heartbroken and infuriated.
Enzo admitted frankly, "Yes."
He couldn't be bothered to weave a lie to placate her hurt feelings. He was even somewhat impatient.
"Lydia, you're intelligent, but your current attitude disquiets me. It's merely an injury. It should be an honor for you to sacrifice for our clan. Let alone I'm your father, you don't have the right to question me like this. If I want you to die, what you need to do is to obediently lay your throat under my knife, do you understand?”
"Let's go," Enzo ordered Japheth and left.
Lydia, standing in place, watched as the two walked away.
After taking her medicine, Lydia went to sleep early, her dreams filled with all kinds of twisted human nature she'd witnessed from childhood till now.
In a state of daze, Lydia felt her servants nudging her, trying to wake her up, all the while anxiously uttering something.
Through the haze, Lydia vaguely heard the name Tim.
Having a dream about her mother lingering in front of the leopard's cage, Lydia seized the opportunity to continually force her heavy eyelids open, escaping from the frightful nightmare.
She sat up, shaken, not waiting to ask what the servants were talking about when she heard a commotion outside.
Instantly alert, she inquired, "What happened?"
The two servants feared their capricious mistress.
"Mr. Lucas and Mr. Frank have gathered their men. They are forcing your father to abdicate in the front hall. You should hide quickly."
Lydia interrupted, "Were you just speaking about Tim?"
One servant revealed, "He's been captured and locked up by your father."
Lydia, sitting on the bed, was covered in cold sweat from the horrifying dream.
She immediately got up from her bed and headed for the rightmost area of the courtyard that contained the prison.
She passed through without encountering any guards. Seems like they must all be in the front hall...
Reaching an old room in the dark, Lydia took out a key and opened the door. Borrowing the moonlight to peer inside, she found an empty room full of torture instruments.
The chair in the middle used for restraining people was also unoccupied.
"Miss Callahan, are you here to save me?"
Suddenly, Tim's voice rang out, and his tall, dark figure emerged from behind the door, startling Lydia, who immediately took a couple of steps to the side to avoid him.
She turned to look at Tim and noticed that he was holding a bunch of ropes in his hands. These were clearly the same ropes that had been binding him just a moment ago.
The way he was holding the ropes indicated that he was intending to strangle someone.
In the next moment, he dropped the ropes onto the ground right in front of her.
"Aren't you afraid that releasing me will anger your father and he will stop favoring you, especially since you care about his views so much?" the tone in Tim's speech was incredibly annoying.
Lydia snapped back, "How do you know for sure that I did not come here to kill you? If it were not for you, I wouldn't be injured."
Tim let out a sigh that was mixed with pity and looked at Lydia, saying, "There's a cruel truth. I'm not sure if you want to know it."
