Chapter 762 Flirtatious Softy
When the torch lit the cave entrance ablaze, a loud ear-piercing screech from a swarm of bats could be heard.
When Blaine was on his way back to base, a bat that was barely clinging onto life flew out from the wall of flame toward them. In order to protect the people around him, his arm was grazed by the bat.
The soldiers next to him unleashed their biochemical agent onto the bat, killing it thoroughly.
After that, they lit the bat on fire with a lighter to burn the bat's corpse.
"Director, your arm was cut by the bat when it grazed past you and you need to be rushed back to the infirmary to get treated immediately!"
Blaine stared at that blood stain on the cut as his dark gaze deepened while he frowned.
…
They ran into Ruby who was searching for them at the entrance when they returned to base.
"Are you guys okay? Were you guys attacked by the bats?"
The assistant frantically exclaimed, "The director's arm was cut when a bat grazed past him and he needs emergency treatment immediately!"
Ruby's beady eyes trembled immediately as she exclaimed, "How on earth did you guys not protect your director!"
Although now was not the time to blame since whatever happened had already happened and it would be useless to point the finger at them, Ruby could not help herself from doing that.
Blaine was extremely calm. However he exclaimed, "It has nothing to do with them. You though, well, why haven't you left?"
Ruby reached out and grabbed Blaine's arm as she said, "Stop spouting nonsense now and follow me to the infirmary to get your wounds treated!"
Blaine was grabbed by Ruby as they strode toward the infirmary.
Blaine was stunned when he was grabbed by Ruby as he lowered his head to look at her tightly gripped hands.
He asked after a brief moment, "Are you not afraid?"
Ruby suddenly turned around when they were just about to arrive at the infirmary. She then raised her head and kissed his thin lips.
It was a sudden kiss.
It happened so fast that Blaine did not have time to react and push her away.
"Why should I be afraid of you when you're not a monster?"
Blaine frowned harder as he exclaimed, "Softie, you know exactly what I was talking about."
The woman stared at him with her glimmering beady eyes as she said, "Now that I've touched and even kissed you so even if you had to be quarantined, I will be able to quarantine with you."
"Softie, you're mad."
"I'm not. I just wanted to prove that you've insulted me."
Blaine was stunned and it was only at this moment did he recall the hurtful things he said to her in the morning.
What on earth did he even say to her while he was furious anyway?
He said that she was more than willing to risk her life to stay by Wilson's side but was unwilling to stay a little longer with him here...
It seemed that when his anger took control and got the better of him, he could not control what he said.
Blaine entered the quarantine zone with Ruby.
After Nines had treated Blaine's wound, Blaine ordered people to run some tests on Ruby and after making sure that Ruby was not infected, he made Ruby leave.
Ruby made no efforts in staying behind in the quarantine zone.
Blaine sent Ruby off by watching her leave while his gaze grew deeper and more compassionate.
This single gaze felt as if he was peering into the great unknown.
Nines took a glance at Blaine and shifted his gaze to the leaving Ruby as he teased, "That woman sure is bold, alright. She's bold enough to kiss you were hurt by the bat."
Blaine smiled as his gaze seemed relaxed as he said, "You saw?"
"She kissed you in front of the infirmary's entrance. Look man, there's a huge transparent window pane and I'm able to look out through that. All of us doctors saw it."
As Blaine stared at her back, his gaze grew extremely compassionate as he said, "Yeah, she's brave."
As Nines noticed how infatuated the director was, he waved his hand around in front of his face as he said, "Oh director, you're actually serious with her?"
Blaine stared back at Nines with a cold glare as he snapped back at him, "Is she unworthy of my serious love then?"
"Hmph, so you were sent to this god forsaken place for this woman's sake? You know, if the Glaceau family knew about your possibility of being infected by the SA super virus right now, they will no doubt go after that woman."
"Whoever that dares to go after her when I'm still here, I'll skin them alive."
Although Blaine made that statement in a casual tone, a menacing glint could be seen coming from his eyes.
Nines scoffed as he thought to himself, 'Wow, the director will go after family for this woman's sake.'
'This woman sure is a jinx alright.'
…
Ruby was unable to fall asleep for the entire night.
She called the infirmary immediately the next morning.
"How's Blaine?"
Nines was the one who picked up the call.
Nines had just taken Blaine's temperature. He was having a high fever as his temperature read 39.2 degrees.
Nines wanted to tell her that it was only a normal high fever and found no other symptoms. He might not have contracted the SA super virus.
However, Nines was stubborn and he ended up saying, "Not good. He had a high fever in the middle of the night. It was 40 degrees. It has not subsided yet even till now. Many of his lymph nodes are swollen and there's an 80 percent chance of him contracting the SA super virus."
Ruby remained silent for a good long while through the phone. However, she asked in a calm voice, "Have you synthesized the vaccine for the virus yet?"
Nines shrugged as he said, "Nope. It's still a work in progress."
'Beep, beep, beep…'
Ruby hung up the call.
…
The instant the phone call ended, Nines’ phone was snatched away by Blaine.
"Who allowed you to pick up my calls for me?" The man glared at Nines with a cold gaze.
Nines waved his hands around and replied with an innocent tone, "You're sick director, so I decided to help pick up your calls."
Due to his sudden fever, Blaine's gaze seemed confused as he asked in an impatient tone, "What did you tell her?"
"Nothing much. The director is completely fine."
It did not take long for Ruby to rush over to the quarantine zone.
Blaine stared directly at her through the glass pane.
Blaine asked Nines while staring directly at her eyes, "Are you sure you told her that I was completely fine?"
Nines stuttered, "... Yeah."
"I will murder you after I get out of here."
Nines trembled as he thought about how sour this game turned out to be.
Ruby called Blaine's phone while she stood on the other side of the glass pane.
Ruby asked with a soft tone, "How are you feeling?"
"Still fine."
As Ruby stared at the man's pale and lifeless face, it was unsure why her throat tightened when she was usually so strong and composed.
"Are you really fine?"
The handsome face smiled gently as he stared at her. His voice sounded hoarse due to his fever. However, it sounded quite sexy at the same time. He said, "Look, Doctor Nines was just scaring you. Really, I'm fine."
Ruby sniffled and suddenly called out to him, "Blaine."
Blaine leaned against the window while he was inside. His pose seemed relatively carefree as he asked with a casual expression, "Yeah?"
"Nothing. I just feel like calling you."
Blaine chuckled.
"Look, it's not exactly a bad thing for me to be in here. Softie, I haven't got the chance to rest for a really long time now. Now that I finally get to rest on the bed here, I can sleep as long as I want until I am no longer suspected of being infected."
The way Blaine comforted her felt unique and with a much deeper thought, Ruby felt that he made quite a fair point there.
However… she would obviously still worry about him.
There were some things Ruby initially had no intentions to say since it would be too emotional but she was unsure why she absolutely felt like saying them to him at this moment.
