Chapter 83
Carroll carried me out of the pit. There was a gun in his hand.
He aimed it at Old Madame Brown's forehead.
"You, you, you! A human? A ghost?"
Old Madame Brown shivered with fear.
"What do you think, Old Madame Brown?"
Carroll's voice was as cold as the ice at the South Pole.
"The helicopter was blown up, but you didn't die!" Nathan came to his senses.
"It seems that both my brother and Grandma want me to die!"
Carroll sneered. "Why do you know that the helicopter was blown up?"
Nathan was lost for words.
Did Nathan get involved into the accident?
That was what came to my mind instantly.
"People said so. Nathan is innocent."
Old Madame Brown pulled Nathan behind her back.
I didn't know a human could be so partial. Wasn't Carroll her grandson?
Apart from his wealth, Carroll was as pathetic as me.
Our status at home...
Was low!
"It is said that nobody will know if one is buried here, isn't it?" The smile on Carroll's face was terrifying.
"Yes, Mr. Carroll. This mountain is your private property. After your grandfather died, it is yours. However, you didn't notice it."
Jason made a detailed explanation to Carroll. In the end, he added, "It's private property. Tenure."
"Carroll, what are you doing? Do you want to bury me? I'm your grandmother!"
Old Madame Brown couldn't stand without support from Nathan because her knees went weak with fear.
"I'm sorry, Old Madame Brown. By the way, Mr. Carroll's grandmother is Ms. Iris!"
Then, the bodyguards began to push Old Madame Brown and Nathan.
Soon, Old Madame Brown and Nathan were in the place I had been.
"You, you, you, you will die a miserable death!"
"Carroll, are you insane? Let us go!"
"You jerk, where are your manners? You and your parents are all jerks!"
"Your family committed all kinds of crimes, so you should have no descendants!"
...
All sorts of vicious curses came out of Old Madame Brown's mouth.
I was sick of these curses. I left Carroll's arms and walked to the pit.
With one hand on my waist, I pointed to the old woman in the pit and asked, "What do you mean by no descendants? What do you mean by your branch? The Brown family has a long history. Didn't you curse the Brown family by cursing Carroll?"
"Also, what do you mean by no descendants? Carroll is healthy, and so am I. We will have a basketball team! No! A football team! I will tell my sons to play football in front of your house. Don't worry. I will make compensation if they break your windows! My husband, Carroll, is rich anyway!"
I finished my speech in one breath, relieved.
Old Madame Brown and Nathan had tormented me for a long time. Now, I finally could fight back.
Livid with anger, Old Madame Brown pointed to my nose and shouted, "Rude! Unruly! Why did the Smith family have such an ill-bred child? You know nothing about respect!"
Carroll opened his mouth, but I stopped him from speaking.
I didn't forget what Old Madame Brown had said. "Didn't you let Carroll marry me because I am a bumpkin from Phoenix Village? I didn't grow up in the Smith family. Mrs. Laura brought me up. She's a famous shrew in our village. I learn from her how to quarrel. Therefore, you can't beat me in this field!"
Satisfied, I ran back to Carroll and leaned over softly.
"You do have two faces."
Looking at me in his arms, Carroll shook his head helplessly and cooled down a bit.
He rubbed my messy hair and said, "Come, I'll take you home."
His voice was pleasant like the deep sound of the cello to my ears.
The last sentence from Carroll brought tears into my eyes. "Okay, let's go home."
Carroll picked me up, and I rested my head on his shoulder like a kitten. "Are you going to bury them alive?"
"Dig them out at dawn. Be alert, don't let the old lady die, which will dirty my mountain."
After that, Carroll got into the car with me in his arms.
Home! We were going home.
When the car sped up, I finally felt at ease.
Back in Phoenix Village, I didn't understand why those children had called home their shelters.
I now did. The shelter was a place where you could hide when you were in trouble or after you got hurt.
Now, I had a home too.
Thinking of this, I leaned closer to Carroll.
I smelt the wooden fragrance from the bracelet on his wrist. "So good."
"After such a torment, you don't cry!" Carroll pushed me aside with contempt.
"Do you dislike me?" Pouting, I moved over angrily.
"Alas!" Carroll sighed. "I now know why people who keep cats don't want their cats to wander around."
"Why?" I raised my head with curiosity.
Carroll's jawline was so beautiful that I felt bewitched. I couldn't help stretching my hand to touch it, but Carroll pushed my hand back.
"Because one has to wash it when it gets dirty!"
I lowered my head and looked at my clothes.
What I saw dumbfounded me.
There was mud and leaves all over my clothes.
How dirty!
I raised my head and said, "You can't show me your cold shoulders because I am dirty. I was buried because of your funeral!"
After that, I, indignant, rubbed my dirty clothes on Carroll's.
"Okay, okay, I don't! I won't!" Carroll held me in his arms helplessly. "You are getting bolder and bolder. You don't dread me at all."
"Because you are my family!" I, in Carroll's arms, felt proud.
Then, I felt dizzy.
Carroll regularly patted me on the back. Then, he asked in a low voice, "How is the investigation?"
"Old Madame Brown started this farce because she had nightmares recently. She said that you and your mother tormented her. She sought help from the churches nearby, and the advice was to send the beloved family to you. Therefore, this farce happened."
I could feel that Carroll became cold. "I and my pet are targeted by the mastermind. I think he will soon take action himself."
"Mr. Carroll, do you mean that there is a boss behind the scene?" Jason asked.
