The Ruffians

"No, no, no. I didn't mean offense," Harris quickly explained. "Your face is so beautiful." I turned my head and glanced at myself in the mirror. The girl in the mirror had bright eyes, gleaming teeth, and fair skin. There was no signs of that poor bumpkin at all. I shifted my gaze from the mirror to Harris and tilted my head. "Born this way." Right then, Carroll came downstairs. With both hands in his pockets, he shot one glare at Harris. "It's impolite to stare at my wife like that." "Come on! Beautiful women are great feasts to the eyes." Harris talked back but turned his head in a strange way. "This face lives up to expectations of Mrs. Brown, but you lack something in vibe." "What is it?" I asked curiously. Harris circled around me and then said, "Aggressiveness." I was speechless. For the first time, I heard that one needed aggressiveness to be a wife. Carroll patted me on the shoulder. "Don't waste your time with him. I hope you may come home soon." "Bye." I nodded. "Where are you going, Kelly? Shopping? SPA?" Carroll punched Harris in the chest. "She will go cope with two people for her improvement in aggressiveness." I was lost for words. Carroll sounded right. "Come on! Go. Remember that you're not an illegitimate child. You're Miss Odette and my wife." Carroll opened the door for me and tapped his cheek with his index finger. I stood on tiptoe to kiss him on the face. However, I misjudged his height, so my kiss fell on one corner of his chin. Passion flashed past his eyes. Harris seemed to enjoy this moment. "You are a good flirter." "No, I'm not. I'm short." I muttered to myself with scarlet red face. "I will leave now. Bye-bye." I could clearly feel that Carroll's intent gaze didn't disappear till I entered the elevator. The chauffeur was waiting in the parking lot when I arrived. Along with him was the bodyguard who often stood at the door. I got in the Maybach that Carroll had prepared for me and looked out of the window sadly. Laura was a daredevil. Her visit wasn't a surprise to me. I had foreseen this visit from the day when I blacklisted her phone number. Vampires could find their prey accurately. On my way to the Smith family, Opal called again. "Where are you?" He sounded irritable. "On the way," I said. "Are you a turtle? Are you crawling? Or you don't know how to take a bus! If you don't, hail a taxi!" "Opal, did anyone tell you that you were long-winded?" I asked. "How dare you!" Obviously, Opal restrained himself a bit. "Almost there." I hung up the phone directly. Perhaps because the last speech from Carroll before my department gave me Jason, I felt as calm as the swimming pool in Sky City now. I arrived at Smith's place. Before the villa, there were a black Bentley and a red Porsche parking there. The two cars belonged to Opal and Odette respectively. After I pressed the doorbell, a servant appeared and pulled my arm. "Miss Kelly, you're finally here. Your grandma and aunt have been waiting for you for a long time." I pulled my arm out of the grip for the pain and said, "I can go by myself." The servant was shocked. Then, she looked me up and down with wide-open eyes before saying, "You have changed after a few days as Mrs. Brown." Then, she noticed the bodyguard, who was as sturdy as a mountain behind me, and shut up reluctantly. I didn't waste my breath with a servant and strode to the living room. Laura and my aunt, Elaine Peg, had deliberately dressed up for this visit. They, in their best clothes, were sitting on the sofa reservedly. Opal sat on a bit far from the visitors. After one cold glance at me, he said, "Your grandmother's here to see you." Laura opened her mouth before I did. "Wow, you show your face and wear a dress. You're a widow now. Who are you trying to seduce with this attire?" After a snort, I casually sat opposite Mrs. Laura. "You are an old widow. Who do you want to hit on with these red clothes?" "You bit*h, you don't know your place after a few good days, do you?" Instantly, Laura flared up. She sprang to her feet, pointed at my nose, and cursed, "Do you look down upon us because you are married into a rich family? We've fended for you for nineteen years. Is your ingratitude our reward?" "Laura..." Elaine cautiously tugged at Laura's sleeve. "We're here to ask for a favor. Look at you! Aren't you afraid that she'll turn against you?" Oh, why hadn't I noticed that Elaine was so sensible in the past? I took out my phone and called my uncle. The phone in Laura's trouser pocket rang. "Where's my uncle?" I asked. Elaine had calmed Laura down. Then, she held my hand. "Kelly, your uncle has only one child, your cousin. You should take good care of your cousin if you care about your uncle. A new car is a trifle for you, isn't it?" I withdrew my hand and held my chin up slightly. "I said, where's my uncle?" "Your uncle is working at home. I changed my phone with him," Elaine said rightfully. Laura couldn't come up with such an idea, so the scheming Elaine must be the mastermind here. "Why did you tell her that? If you don't buy a car, I won't leave. I like this big house." Laura lay down on the sofa like a ruffian. Opal remained silent all the time, but his expression was interesting. The corners of his mouth were downward, and his face was livid with anger. I saw a warning in his eyes. I ignored Opal and said, "Stay if you want to. This is the Smith family, and I have married into the Brown family. I don't live here. Stay on if the Smith family calls the police." "Call the police? This is the home of my granddaughter!" Laura stared at me fiercely. It occurred to her that she had a granddaughter by blood here, so she asked, "Where's my granddaughter?" "Not at home." Opal said. Not at home? I raised my head, glanced at the door of Odette's room, and spotted a shadow flashing past. I remembered the eye-catching red car in the yard. Odette was dodging these two ruffians. "Mom, she's Miss Odette. It won't be easy for us to see her." Elaine rolled her eyes at Laura and reminded in a low voice, "Your granddaughter is Kelly, who we have fended for 19 years!"
