My Loss
I saw Carroll sitting in the back seat.
His smiling eyes, his cold jawline, and his Adam's apple...
I felt sore in my nose, and tears welled up in my eyes.
"Carroll, I almost got killed!"
I threw myself into his arms and told him what had just happened.
My snot and tears stained his clothes.
His expression became grim after I finished my story. "Where is he?"
Sniffing, I said in a sobbing voice, "Peter tied him up!"
"Okay." Carroll frowned. "Peter finally did something good."
"However, he let his apartments to those swindlers, and his tenant got a lot of money from scams!" I complained.
I was not stupid. I could tell that that swindler knew Peter.
According to what the swindler had said, it seemed every tenant in this building was a crook.
Carroll stroked my hair. "The situation in this place is complicated, and the innocent like you are the targets for the crooks here."
Thanks to Carroll, I now knew that Peter reserved this building for those people from shady businesses.
Carroll had foreseen my suffering at the sight of the address of my cram school.
He remained silent because he knew my stubborness well.
However, the part with the weapon involved was beyond his imagination.
I was at a loss for words. I moved my lips but didn't know what to say.
Pinching my face, Carroll asked in a cold voice, "Will you go out by yourself again?"
I shook my head...
"I'll take care of your college entrance examination." Carroll withdrew his hand and continued, "You will get yourself into trouble when you are out of my sight!"
I was speechless.
Well, I would stay within your sight.
I curled my lips and swallowed back my words.
Soon, Jason came out of the elevator.
Carroll rolled down the car window.
"The police want Madam to give her statement and ask about her losses," Jason said.
Carroll shot one glance at me, who had just calmed down. I looked like a frightened deer with tears around the corners of my eyes.
"Peter was there, so tell him to give his statement. My wife, young and timid, can't stand another shock. As for her loss, can't we check it out at home?"
Hearing Carroll, Jason nodded. "I'll communicate with the police right away."
Carroll rolled up the car window and pulled me into his arms. "Let's go home."
I felt warm in the heart when Carroll said that he would take me home.
I rubbed my head against his chest and then said in a low voice, "Mr. Carroll, thank you for giving me a real home."
"Do you want a home?" Carroll pressed his chin against my forehead.
"What?" I looked at Carroll with confusion.
He looked at me and said, "The suite in Sky City will be yours tomorrow."
I curled my lips. "What!"
"All the houses I will buy will be put under your name."
Carroll mistook my surprise for the dissatisfaction.
"I..." I wanted to say that there was a misunderstanding.
However, Carroll didn't give me the chance to explain.
Back in Sky City, Rose asked me how much I lost.
I found the receipt that I put in the nightstand. "Thirty thousand dollars."
Rose blinked her eyes. "Is that all?"
"I think so." I thought for a moment, found the record of my money transfer that day, and added, "And the fare for two trips, 24 dollars in total."
The fare in Costsley was so expensive.
Rose put the came bag in front of me and said, "Madam, this is Hermes' latest product, 1.2 million dollars."
"1.2 million?" I stuttered with wide-open eyes.
I took this bag because it was the largest one in the cloakroom.
I didn't know that it was equivalent to an apartment in Costsley.
I swallowed one mouthful of air and asked with dout, "Really?"
Rose nodded with a bitter face.
I lay on the table with despair. Oh, my bag!
What a great loss!
Rose asked, "Will you count it as your loss?"
"No," I said bitterly. "It has nothing to do with that Swindler. It's Peter's fault."
That was right!
Peter!
I walked to Carroll with my bag. "Mr. Carroll, well, my bag..."
After one glance at my bag Carroll said, "It is broken. I'll buy you a new one."
"No, no, no! Peter flung this bag, so he should make compensation!"
There were many bags similar to this one in the cloakroom.
They were of different sizes.
I didn't need a new bag, but compensation!
"Okay." Carroll put down his laptop, took out his mobile phone, and dialed Peter's number.
He turned on the speaker.
"What's wrong? Do you want to thank me?" Peter yawned.
"My wife said that you broke her bag. Compensation." Carroll pushed her phone forward.
"1.2 million dollars," I added.
"F*ck! Are you two bandits? I saved that b*tch out of righteousness, but you ask me for compensation!"
Peter raised his voice to the top, sounding ear-piercing.
Carroll tapped the table, and then his tone became cold. "If you didn't indulge those people, how would my wife fall into danger?"
"Your bad," I echoed.
"Carroll, did you get infected by that stupid girl and become a simpleton? I'm still at the police station for the statement. Do you have any conscience..."
Carroll interrupted Peter. "You may say no, but your building in the red-light district will be sealed."
Over the phone, Peter lowered his voice. "Don't, don't. I will make compensation, okay?"
"Jason is at the police station. Ask him for the bank account."
Clap!
Carroll hung up the phone without hesitation.
After a while, I received a message.
It was from my bank...
"1.2 million!"
After counting the zeros in the message, I was spirited again.
"Happy?" Carroll chuckled.
"Yes! Very!" I clapped my hands and said, "But, what is the red-light district?"
It seemed Peter cared about that building very much.
"Peter's important source of money," Carroll said casually.
Oh!
No wonder Peter was so nervous.
When I was chatting with Carroll, one bodyguard led Wolfie over slowly.
"My wolf?" I was overjoyed. I walked over and untied the harness for Wolfie.
Wolfie rubbed its big head against me and then stretched comfortably.
Hiding in the kitchen, Rose did not dare to come over. "Is that a wolf?"
"Relax, relax. It doesn't bite people. Treat it as a dog."
Right after my explanation, Wolfie strolled in the house.
"Are you sure?" Rose tentatively took half a step out of the kitchen.
