"Closer," he breathed.
I hesitated. My legs were trembling, not from fear anymore, but from the crushing weight of the adrenaline crash. Every muscle in my body felt like it had been pulled tight and then suddenly snapped. But I moved. I stepped closer to the bed until my knees bumped against the mattress, leaning over the rail until my face was inches from his.
I lowered myself until our foreheads touched. I could feel the heat of his fever radiating off him, "You didn't run," he murmured against my skin, his voice sounding rough, "The door was open. The chaos... You could have run."
"I know," I whispered back.
"Why didn't you?"
The question was soft, and I pulled back slightly, just enough to look into his dark, drug-hazed eyes. They were searching mine, "Why did you save me?" he pressed, his brow furrowing as he fought the fog of the anesthesia. "You had the perfect opportunity."
