Chapter 6
Janet's messages kept coming in.
[Janet: By the way, look at this. [Picture] This is my ultrasound report. I'm pregnant.]
I zoomed in on the picture and finally made out the first line on the report.
[Embryo at 8 weeks, threatened miscarriage.]
[Janet: Yesterday, we did it countless times on the rooftop, trying every position. Maybe we were too rough, and the baby has a tendency toward threatened miscarriage. Oh well, it’s all his fault. He said being with you at home is like being with a dead person, so he wanted to do something exciting with me.】
【Janet: The doctor said that whether it’s to preserve the pregnancy or have an abortion, the father needs to sign the consent form. I can only call him down. After all, compared to his child, the child is more important, right?】
I took a taxi home from the hospital.
I went to a law firm.
“Hello, I’d like to hire your firm to draft a divorce agreement for me.”
I don’t want anything, and the lawyer is reliable.
In half an hour, I had the full divorce agreement.
The lawyer told me, “You don’t need the husband’s signature. As long as you’ve been separated for two years, this divorce agreement will take effect automatically.”
When I left the hospital with the divorce agreement, Emmanuel called.
“Erin, where are you? I searched the entire hospital but couldn’t find you.”
I said, “I waited for you for a long time but couldn’t find you, so I went home first.”
“Alright, as long as you’re safe at home. I’m sorry, Erin. There’s something at the company that requires my personal attention, so I might have to go on a business trip for a few days. Take care of yourself at home. Next week, I’ll definitely cancel all my work to be with you.”
I sighed deeply.
A lie told a thousand times becomes the truth.
I no longer feel any emotional turmoil.
“Alright, go ahead.”
“Our Erin is the most understanding. Be good. I’ll bring you some small lilies when I come back tomorrow.”
“Mature?” I asked. “Emmanuel, do you just like women who act spoiled and clingy, never letting go? I’m too mature, so I’m boring, right?”
Emmanuel paused for a moment: “Of course not. I love you just the way you are.”
“Emmanuel, would you fall in love with another woman?”
“Of course not.”
“If you change your mind, I'll leave you forever.”
Emmanuel chuckled: “Go ahead and run. I can block the airport and train station. As long as you're still called Erin, I'll never let you leave me.”
But on my passport, I'm no longer called Erin.
I'm called Harriet.
I emphasized again: “I'm serious. If I can leave you, I can make sure you can't find me.”
Emmanuel still laughed, as if teasing a cat: “Alright, then run first. I’ll give you three days, then I’ll come find you. I said it: as long as you’re still called Erin, no matter where you run, I’ll find you. You can’t shake me off.”
Can’t shake me off?
I laughed.
Then let’s give it a try.
