Chapter 1128 Do You Want Me To Make A Call To Ask
Quentin was puzzled.
That bewilderment lasted for one hour but the person who was supposed to appear never made her appearance in his office.
His brows furrowed slightly. ‘It looks like my actions last night had indeed frightened her.
‘Otherwise, why would she not appear today when we’ve been doing fine before this?
‘Is she serious about not wanting to get involved with me?’
Quentin lowered his gaze and nobody could read his emotions. After a while, he called Jovene and told her that he wanted to have the meeting today instead.
Jovene was feeling exasperated that the meeting—which was supposed to be today and had been postponed till tomorrow—was now brought forward again. However, as an experienced secretary, she dared not say anything nor air her grouses. She merely nodded her head and went off to get things done.
Half an hour later, everyone was ready to start the meeting.
Quentin glanced at Jovene before entering the meeting room.
“Did you receive any news today?”
Jovene was dumbfounded by this sudden question but she quickly realized that Iris had not appeared today.
“Nope.”
She shook her head as her mind spun swiftly.
‘Iris had been coming every day on the dot. Even I got used to her presence, what more Quentin. When Quentin asked to postpone the meeting, I thought that he had especially done it for Iris.
‘Turns out she didn’t even come today.
‘While Quentin was left to wait in his office.
‘He can wait all he wants, but why did he have to bring the meeting back up again?
‘And he’s even asking me if I received any news?
‘Isn’t it obvious that he is asking about Iris?’
“President Hall, do you want me to make a call to ask?”
“Never mind.”
Quentin coldly rejected Jovene’s suggestion and walked into the meeting room with indifference. She watched him and tilted her head, not knowing what to say at that moment.
Everyone could feel that Quentin was not in the best of moods during the meeting. They were all worried that he would make it difficult for them when they spoke to him, thus they were all very careful with their words and were afraid of saying the wrong thing.
Jovene watched in silence as the meeting went on.
She found that even if Quentin was in a bad mood, he could still control his emotion and temper extremely well. He listened to those who were talking in the meeting and would occasionally give suggestions.
Jovene lamented inwardly, ‘This man can really hide his emotions well and has a strong reign over himself.
‘I wonder when will he ever blow up?’
After the meeting, Quentin returned to his office. Jovene thought about it and went downstairs to ask the receptionist.
The receptionist was feeling guilty and dared not look Jovene straight in the eye when she was being questioned.
She had been worried after what happened a few days ago. She was worried that trouble would follow her, thus she advised the girls against it when the other girls said that they wanted to visit Iris’s shop on a weekend to give Iris some trouble.
They refused to listen to her and even scolded her for being a chicken. The receptionist finally said that she was not going and they could do whatever they wanted.
The receptionist immediately felt a sense of doom when Jovene questioned her now that Iris had not shown up today.
‘She had not appeared for one day and Miss Jovene already came here personally to ask. I now see how important this woman is. Miss Jovene would not be personally inquiring about the delivery girl’s whereabouts if she were just a regular delivery girl.’
“I-I’m not sure… she comes every day, why isn’t she…”
Jovene was a smart person with keen observation. She guessed that something was not right the moment she noticed how the receptionist stuttered and dared not look her in the eye. She narrowed her eyes and looked at the receptionist.
“What’s wrong with you?”
The receptionist’s expression froze the moment Jovene asked.
“Nothing.”
“If it’s nothing then why do you look so nervous?”
The receptionist was so frightened that she bit her lower lip. “I… I-I’m just… she’s usually here every day but she isn’t today, so I’m just a little worried.”
“Impossible,” Jovene immediately called her excuses a bluff, “if you’re worried, your eyes wouldn’t be darting all over the place that you don’t even dare to look at me. Do you know what’s written on your face now?”
The receptionist instinctively touched her face and asked with confusion, “What’s written on it?”
‘Since when does my face have any words on it?
‘How is that possible?’
“Two words, I’m guilty.” Jovene smiled.
“Impossible,” the receptionist shook her head, “why would my face have any words?”
Jovene, “...”
‘Is this receptionist stupid or what? Did she take what I said literally?’
Jovene cleared her throat and said, “I think I need to explain this to you. What I meant was your expression shows that you’re feeling guilty and the way you’re trying to brush it off proves that you’re hiding something. Spill it. What happened? Do you know something?”
The receptionist shook her head and insisted that nothing wrong happened.
“Okay then. It’s fine if you don’t want to tell me now. Wait till I find out then…”
The receptionist immediately said, “It’s none of my business. They insisted that they wanted to see the girl who was delivering food to President Hall every day. All of them came and I couldn’t stop them, that’s why…”
‘I can’t believe she confessed so soon.’ Jovene raised her brows at that thought.
“So, did you all bully her? Is that why she got frightened and didn’t come today?”
“No, no, no, no, that’s not it!” The receptionist immediately denied it and tried to defend herself. “This happened two days ago and Iris still came the next day. I don’t know why she didn’t come today…”
‘Two days ago?’
Jovene thought about it. ‘If it was two days ago, then it should be something minor. Besides, Iris didn’t mention anything about it when I saw her so it should have been a small issue.
‘But…’ Jovene narrowed her eyes and stared at the receptionist dangerously.
“Even if that’s got nothing to do with her not coming today, was it right for you all to gang up and bully her?”
The receptionist bit her lower lip and appeared aggrieved. “I didn’t. It wasn’t me. I didn’t say anything that day. The other girls got into a quibble with Iris. Miss Jovene, everyone has a minor crush on President Hall that’s why they all feel that it’s unfair when a delivery girl suddenly appeared and could freely enter his office. Miss Jovene, please don’t get angry at us, okay? We’ve only said some things to her but we didn’t bully her.”
The receptionist said it with sincerity and Jovene also felt that she did have a point.
Iris’s frequent appearance at the office would surely invite some jealousy from the other female staff.
“She’s just here to deliver food. If someone hadn’t spread baseless rumors around, not many people would know about this. You’re here to work, not here to gossip. It’s no use acting all innocent after something happened.”
Jovene then looked at her sharply and spoke with a much colder tone,
“Hall Group only hires capable people. If something like this happened again, then… you should hand in your resignation letter.”
