Chapter 38

Jolene arrived at the hospital entrance at 7:45 pm. Suddenly, a figure darted out. Ethan blocked her path and gripped her hand tightly. "Jolene, please forgive me." "Ethan, let go!" Jolene never expected that he would cause a scene at the hospital. The hospital was crowded, and everyone was now staring at them. With reddened eyes, Ethan knelt down and said, "I don't care that you were someone's kept woman. I just want you back with me. I can give you money. "I know that you got into City Hospital through connections. Otherwise, without power or influence, how could someone from the countryside like you get in…" Onlookers began pointing at Jolene. "A kept woman—how shameless." "The world is getting worse. Now, all the pretty young women want to take shortcuts." The crowd's harsh comments swirled around Jolene. Jolene said coldly, "He's not my boyfriend! If you keep holding on to me, I'll call the police!" "Everyone, help me talk some sense into her! This is my girlfriend, Jolene Adkins. She's an intern doctor in the Acupuncture and Rehabilitation Department. She has cheated on me countless times with rich old men, and I don't want her to go down the wrong path!" Malice flashed in Ethan's eyes as he deliberately revealed Jolene's personal information. Molly had said that Jolene had been abandoned by her sugar daddy. Now, her reputation was ruined and she had nowhere to run. Thinking about what had happened during this time filled Ethan with resentment. Every investment his family made had lost money, and he had been extremely unlucky. "Lady, you should count yourself lucky to have such a good boyfriend!" Jolene found herself unable to argue back. These days, it was all too easy to spread rumors about a pretty woman, and no one would bother to verify the truth. She took out her phone to call the police, but it was knocked out of her hand by a passerby. "Move aside! Don't crowd the hospital entrance. Make way!" Several security guards shouted to maintain order, dispersing the bystanders. "Move out of the way!" "Good morning, Mr. Linfield!" Samuel approached, bent down to pick up Jolene's phone, and then cast a cold glance at Ethan. "Causing a disturbance at the hospital can get you detained," he warned. Ethan stiffened and replied, "I'm just talking to my girlfriend. Is that a crime?" Samuel said impatiently, "You're disrupting my employee from doing her job. Guards, take him to the security office and blacklist him." "Let go! Jolene, you're really amazing. You found yourself a new lover in such a short time!" Ethan shouted curses as the security guards quickly escorted him away. Jolene took a deep breath. Her fingers were trembling, and her heart was filled with fury. Samuel extended his hand, handing the phone back to her. Jolene took it and said in a steady voice, "Thank you, Mr. Linfield." "I don't know what your relationship is with that man, but next time, don't bring your personal issues to the hospital. It would be quite embarrassing if Steven found out about this," Samuel frowned. "Yes." Jolene felt her throat tighten. "Get to work." Seeing her aggrieved look, Samuel felt a wave of inexplicable irritation. "Yes." Jolene stepped into the hospital, where Molly was waiting for her in the corridor. "Jolene, did you enjoy the show this morning?" Molly flashed a charming smile. "Ethan is so crazy about you. It's too bad his family is going bankrupt, and you instigated it." Jolene glared at Molly coldly. "What did I do to offend you?" Molly's expression turned icy as she sneered, "Your existence offends me." After all, Jolene was beautiful, competent in her job, and well-liked. A country bumpkin like her should stay in the mud. Why did she have to shine?
