Ella’s POV
“Something that cannot be done with one, but must be done with two,” I repeated, staring up at the crystal suspended in its orb. The green light pulsed gently, almost like it was breathing, casting moving shadows across the stone walls of the chamber. “What does that even mean?”
Liam knit his brows together, thinking for a moment. “Well, it has to be something physical, right? An action we perform together.”
“Okay. What can’t you do alone but requires two people?”
“A handshake?” Liam suggested.
It seemed as good a place to start as any. We approached the orb together, and Liam extended his hand. I clasped it firmly, and we shook. For a moment, nothing happened—and then the orb pulsed once, brightly, before dimming again.
“Did that work?” I asked, looking around.
Liam glanced at where Alistaire’s spirit apparently stood. “No. He’s shaking his head. Also, he’s laughing at us.”
My shoulders slumped. “Great. What else requires two
