Chapter FORTY-ONE

Dane We moved towards the center of the ballroom where there was an empty spot. The jazz music had begun playing slowly and then the air around the room grew romantic. Maybe it wasn’t that. Maybe it was because I was with her. There was something about her I couldn't fathom. Something different. She was different from the other girls. Every single lady in the ballroom knew I would be there. They were dying to ask me out. They were begging for me to choose them. But their efforts irritated me. I was irked that they all saw me as a commodity. I mean, who wouldn’t want to be with the prince? I was the hero of my pack, and yet I didn’t feel like it. I just felt like I did something wrong. It was wrong in every way except in the eyes of my people. They saw it as an opportunity to get back what they had lost. But she was different. She didn’t care about who I was. She was so nonchalant standing next to me. She talked to me like I was a commoner. And I actually like it. It was unbelievable.
