I thought Ethan would be lenient with Emily after watching the surveillance footage, since they had been close before, and honestly, I expected him to make excuses for her, the way he always did for people in his circle.
I braced myself for him to turn a blind eye, to smooth things over with some cold apology and let her off with nothing but a warning.
But what happened next surprised me. For the first time in a long time, Ethan’s composure snapped.
He stood at the center of the crowded conference room, face tense and hands clenched at his sides, the still image from the surveillance footage flickering on the big screen behind him.
The footage left no room for doubt, Lucas sobbing behind a locked door, Emily turning her back as I screamed for help, the guards dragging me away while my son struggled to breathe.
Every painful detail was right there for all to see.
