Chapter 40 : Just Get Over It

Cat POV I had to go into the resort to find the bathroom. When I pushed the bathroom door open, someone grabbed me and pulled me into a nearby closet. "H-hey!" I snapped, pushing at the person that grabbed me. "Cat, it's just me, calm down," Aaron's voice said through the dim lighting. "What!?" I cried. I reached around and found a light switch, flipping it on. Aaron and were pressed together in the small closet, only about a foot between us. He was looking down, his eyes sunken in. He had his hands stuffed into his pockets like he wanted to show me that he wouldn't touch me again. "What is this about, Aaron?" I snapped. I pushed at his chest again, making him step further away from me. "I wanted to talk to you. When I saw you in that dress… well, I remembered all the reasons I fell in love with you, why I still love you," Aaron said. I groaned and rolled my eyes. This couldn't be happening! Aaron had just said his wedding vows. Did he think I would fall for this again? Putting my hands on my hips, I glared at him. "Look, I got drenched in wine a few minutes ago. I want to go to the bathroom and clean up. Do we have to do this now?" "I know, I'll make it quick," Aaron said. He reached out for my hands. I pulled back and tucked my hands behind my back. There was no way I was letting Aaron touch me. "Okay, make it quick," I insisted. It didn't matter, whatever he was trying to say. "I still love you, Cat. This marriage to Fiona, it isn't real. It is just for show," he said. Scoffing, I shook my head and looked around the janitor's closet. Aaron had successfully positioned himself between me and the door. I wouldn't get out unless he got out of the way or if I pushed around him. "She really wanted a wedding to show off to her friends and family. With the baby and everything, she thought it would look better to be pregnant after getting married. But it is all a sham," he continued. "Aaron, that baby is your baby!" I said, poking him in the chest. He sighed, hanging his head. "I don't have proof of that. Fiona slept with a lot of people." "Then you would have ordered a paternity test. I know you're not that stupid," I said. Although, I doubted that statement if he was seriously trying to get me back, again. I started tapping my foot on the floor, indicating my impatience. "I just wanted Fiona to be happy, so I agreed to this fake ceremony so her pregnancy wouldn't be a scandal. It isn't real. We're supposed to sign the marriage papers back in the States. What's most important, though, is that I still love you," Aaron repeated. "Why should that matter to me?" I asked, arching an eyebrow. "Because it means we can still get married. Legally, for real, we can get married. I can still leave Fiona whenever I want," he said. He lifted his eyes to my face and gave me a pleading, sad look. I gaped at him. It felt like my eyes were about to pop out of my head. The closet felt really hot all of a sudden. I fanned myself with my hand and looked around for a window or air vent, anything. "You're completely delusional." "But we were so good together," he argued, reaching for me again. "I know I messed up. Big time. And I'm sorry." "Try to touch me again, and I will personally ensure you'll never have any more kids," I hissed. Aaron swallowed hard and stuffed his hands in his pockets again. He rocked back on his heels and stopped looking at me directly. "We were great together," he continued. "Until you cheated and got another girl pregnant. Someone you have since married for all intents and purposes. There is no way I'm taking you back." And I meant it this time. I was done with Aaron for good. Aaron sighed, his eyes reddening. "I can't live without you. There's no way I can ever be happy with another woman," Aaron said pleadingly. "I realize that now." Bile rose in my throat. Aaron was nothing but a disgusting pig. He never knew what he wanted until he didn't have it. Then he'd cry and beg to try and get it back. How had I ever loved a person like him? "You made your bed Aaron. Now lie in it. Man up, and go back to your wife!" I pushed passed him, grabbing the doorknob. Aaron grabbed my free hand and dropped to his knees. "Please, Cat. Don't go! Take me back. I'll never do anything to hurt you again, I promise." I looked down my nose at him and sneered. "Leave me alone, Aaron. We're done. There's nothing between us anymore." As much as I'd resisted Luke and his idea to bring me to the wedding, I now realized he'd been right. I needed this. Now, more than ever, I saw Aaron as nothing but a pathetic loser. I was better than him, and I didn't need him. I opened the closet door and stepped out. "You f*cking b*tch!" someone cried. "What are you doing with my husband?!" Fiona launched herself at me, fingers curled into claws and aimed right at my eyes. I grabbed her wrists, but Fiona kicked me in the shin. "OW!" Hobbling back, I almost fell over. Fiona shrieked and came at me again, tearing at my dress. "You're nothing but a money-grabbing wh*re!" she cried. She tore a rip down the side of my dress. I hip-checked Fiona, sending her to the nearest wall. She grabbed it, breathing hard and glaring at me. "I'd cool it if you don't want to lose your baby," I warned her, glaring. "Is that a threat, sl*t?" Fiona snarled. Shaking my head, I crossed my arms and took another step back so she couldn't scratch at me again. Her manicured acrylic nails had left a burning scrape down my arm, blood slowly appearing on my skin. Now I really needed to get to the bathroom and clean up. One of my dress straps fell loose, and the dress hung lopsided on my body. Groaning, I shook my head. "That's not a threat. But you're pregnant. You can't fight me without risking the baby," I reminded her. Fiona had tears streaming down her cheeks. She wrapped her arms around her belly and snarled at me. "You just want to take everyone from me! My brother, my husband! Why are you so greedy?" she cried. "I didn't do anything. Your husband dragged me into that closet and insisted that he still loved me and that his marriage to you was fake. Take that up with him," I said, nodding to the closet. "WHAT!?" Fiona shrieked. She ripped the closet door open and narrowed her eyes at Aaron. Before going inside, she shot a glare at me again. "Don't think I don't know you're just after my brother for his money." I didn't bother to respond. "Listen, babe, this isn't what you think," Aaron said, lifting his hands defensively. "Are you serious? You just said your vows to me a few hours ago, and now you're sneaking into closets with the likes of her!" Fiona cried, pointing out of the closet at me. "No. I swear that's not what happened. You really believe her?" Aaron asked. "She is just trying to come between us because she's jealous of you." "Jealous?" Fiona asked skeptically. I saw Aaron loop his arms around Fiona. One hand was placed on her stomach. Fiona looked up at him, and I could tell she was starting to believe him and fall under his spell. I almost felt sorry for her, not knowing who her husband really was. "We have something she'll never have. And she's jealous. But it is you and me babe, forever," he told her. He rubbed her stomach and kissed her cheek. Fiona lit up. "I love you so much, Aaron." "I love you too, forever and always," Aaron added. The sappiness was nauseating. I rolled my eyes at the ceiling. Some time ago, I would have never believed Aaron to be capable of such deceit. Now, I'd witnessed it twice. And it didn't make my heart ache anymore. I knew Aaron's true colors now, and I had expected nothing less the moment I saw Fiona. Aaron would play the victim and get Fiona back to him. He glanced at me, giving me a cruel smirk. Rolling my eyes, I shook my head. Who was he trying to fool? I wondered who the gold digger really was. Fiona wrapped her arms around Aaron's neck and pulled him down into a deep, sloppy kiss. She opened her eyes and looked over Aaron's shoulder at me. Her eyes were bright with anger and hatred. Turning from them, I left the resort. I walked right past the gardens and away from the wedding venue. I'd seen everything I needed to see, and there was nothing left for me to do there. "Cat!?" Luke called after me. He hurried up to my side and grabbed my shoulder. "You're leaving?" he asked, his eyes soft. "I've had enough of this wedding. Aaron is a complete loser," I said, laughing humorlessly. "Well, I'm glad you see that now," Luke said smirking. "Do you really want to leave, though?" "I think it is best. After what just happened, I'm not sure Aaron or Fiona will put up with my presence anymore. They got into a bit of a spat because Aaron tried to get me back… again," I said, kicking at the dirt. Luke groaned and rolled his eyes. "I knew he'd try something; I didn't think it would be that." "It is good to know that he hasn't changed. But you know what, I have. I'm not going to let his issues be my problem anymore," I said. Luke took my hands in his and nodded. He lifted them and one at a time, kissed the backs, running his thumbs over my knuckles. "I'm glad to hear you say that. If you really want to get out of here, we can go together," he suggested. "Don't you have to be here for the toasts and all the family stuff?" I asked, arching an eyebrow. "You really think Fiona wants me to be there? I brought you, remember?" he said, chuckling. "Alright, sure." Luke left me to go get us a ride back to the villa. I leaned against one of the garden walls and listened to the murmur of people talking go silent. They were about to start the best man and maid of honor speeches. Everyone was so happy to celebrate this marriage. If Aaron had resigned himself to misery, that wasn't my problem. He'd spend the rest of his life pretending he was happy. But at the end of the day, he lost. After everything he thought he gained when hurting me, I'd walk away to bigger, better things. He never would.
