Camilla's pov
I didn't look back when the door clicked behind me. I was standing in my father's former office, which I hadn't visited since the funeral. Everything was covered in dust, as if the world had simply forgotten he had ever been.
However, he was everywhere. The slight scent of his cologne clung to the leather seat, and his jacket was still dangling behind the door. My chest constricted.
What brought me here?
Perhaps because I had trouble sleeping. Perhaps because I needed answers following the events at the warehouse last night, including the blood and the screaming. Perhaps I also knew they would be buried in this room.
The back of the bookshelf was fake. I had once caught him, stuffed peppers inside, and pretended not to notice. I pulled it open.
It was there. A lockbox made of metal. Little, chilly, and heavy.
I didn't even consider it. I reached for the fireplace poker, inserted it into the latch, and then cracked it open.
