This was it.
This was how it would end.
The flames crackled hungrily all around me, licking the air with sharp, smoky tongues. The pain in my limbs had dulled into numbness, and the fire's heat pressed against my skin like invisible shackles. My lungs burned with every breath, and my body trembled—though from the fire, the fear, or the betrayal, I couldn’t tell anymore.
Evelyn’s plan had worked perfectly.
